AUG. 2-1 .: Guy O u tlan d and his Cycle Tech GPz750 swept the 750cc Amateur classes at the Sears Point Pro-Am. Outland's odyssey began in the combined Modified Production race. Scott Mitch ell , on hi s Open class 900 Kawasaki, led th e first wave of O pen and 750cc riders in to turn 30 o ne fo llo wed by Outland. T he pack d iced th rough two la ps unt il Below had a cha nce 10 show the superior horsepow er o f hi s Open class bike an d set o u t a lter Mit chell. That left Outland barel y in front o f Leopold a nd Zipperl e. Leopold was g lued to Outland 's rea r wh eel a nd af ter two laps o f a ttem p ted passes he ap pea red 10 sit back a nd prepare for a las t lap pass. But any plans were upset by J im J epsen wh o charged th rough the leaders after runn in g away from a dis tant seco nd wave o f 600cc class riders. Mit ch ell won th e O pen cla ss. The next event brought together th e Ama teu r T wins classes, a so li tarv singles rider and th e few AFNI Fo rmula T wo rid ers who d idn 't have a n AMA Pro licen se, The T wi ns wave was led by Rich ar d Key on a 1000cc BMW and Mark Yar row o n a 920cc Yama ha . Before the firs t lap was over, Key was joined by Eric Swortzfigure on a 750cc No rton and the nex t rider to join the lea ders was Steve Wickla nd, who had closed on the big bore Twins by ridi ng the wheels o ff of hi s 450cc Honda Ha wk . Wickland sl ipped pas t Key for seco nd place and began a relentless a ttac k on Swortzfig ure. Th e baili e o f Norton hors epow er vs. j. he Hawk 's handling ro lled th ro ugh lap after lap until Wickland finally made his move and dove inside of Swortzfigure's Norton in th e turn II hairp in . H e made th e ins ide pass work, an d led up the front strai ght unt il Swortzfigure retook the lead in tu rn two, o n ly to be passed aga in in th e next bend. At th ai point Swortzfigure ba cked of f. T he lat ch a n d hinge on Wickland's sea t had broken under ha rd brak in g in turn I I as Wi ck land reported , " Whe n I was hanging o ff, it wa s han gin g o ff with m e. And I d idn 'I want 10 fall o ff a nd hit so meo ne . Wickl and slo wed in turn five a nd tossed th e sea l in th e bush es. But he rod e o n, si u ing on th e fra me tubes. Swortzfigure used th e opport u n ity to rega in th e lead while Wickl and found h is hard perch d ifficu lt 10 handle and he lost both tim e and pos itio ns . Swortzfigure won overa ll a nd the 750cc class w hi le Key took th e O pen class. The fans were a lso treat ed to a seco nd race within th e overa ll race. Skip Gatrell and Mik e Glisson were in th e Formula T wo wave far behind the lead ers a nd had a whee l-to-whee l battle. After six laps of pass a nd repass. Glisson came out in front. Sh awn Leopol d was first o ff th e line in th e Stock Product ion race. bu t Guy Ou tland moved pas t him in turn five. Leo pold re -took th e lead by tu rn 10 a n d set the pattern for the race of whee l-to-wheel dici ng. In th e 600cc wave, Jim Jepson, o n his Toomey TMC Raci n g FJ600, threa ten ed to repea t his runaway victory in the Modified Production race when he quickly o u tdis tanced Ed Ragl e and Morgan Murphy. But Mark Smith had begun a ch arge through th e pack o n his 500cc Int erceptor a nd by th e seco nd lap had moved up to seco nd p lace and sta rted to wh ittle a way a t Je psen 's five-seco nd lead , Outland a nd Leopold co m in ued their di ce a t th e from o f th e pack a nd Outland slowly gained the upper- h and. Smith closed o n Jepsen , wh o responded by p icking up th e pa ce. Smith sta yed with him a nd together th ey ca ug h t up with th e leaders o f th e race. J epsen got pa st Leopold, a nd th en O utland, but Sm ith 's bike fa iled wh en he tr ied 10 follow. J ep sen won; followed by Outland wh o wo n th e 750cc class. T he last race o n Sa tu rday brough t out th e Superstr eet classes, Denny Dohert y got th e holeshor, but Allen Satterl ee sta yed with him until turn seven wh en he ca me in 100 hot a nd slid o ff th e track. Satter lee was uninj ured but o u t of th e race. In th e 750cc I wave Gu y Outland beat Armin Zipperle in th e drag race 10 th e fir st turn . T he last wave o f 450cc bikes was a closer battl e. Malcolm Hill got in front o f J on Hill a nd Chris Mast, but th ey weren' t content with a ny th ing but first. In th e ens u ing di ce. Malco lm H ill stayed in front while J on Hill a n d Ma st ra n wh eel-t o-wheel . o n ly a few feet behind. By th e halfway po int Outland found h imself raci ng with Malcolm Hill on a sma ller, lighter RZ350. Once th ey ca ugh t u p wi th th e backrn a rkers, th e more n imble Yamah a showed its advan ta ge w hen Ma lc olm H ill p a ssed o n th e o uts ide in turn II. Dohert y took the o vera ll win a nd Outland wo n th e 750cc cla ss, righ t behind Malcolm Hill wh o won the 450cc class. Do h ert y. accustomed 10 runn ing alone a t the front of th e Open GP class, received a su rprise wh en cha llenger Alle n Saller lee blew by h im in tu rn six, th e carouse l, foll owed by Jon Litsey o n a Formula o ne Ka wasa ki . Dohert y recovered h is co mposure by tu rn I I a nd got by Litsey a fter a bra king duel, but Sallerlee was more of a problem . A lap lat er th e two en tered turn I I side by side, and Dohert y won the drag race u p th e fro nt straig h t. Sa tterlee stayed clos e a nd slipped back pa st Doh ert y in th e esses a half lap lat er. The pair di ced for a lap, th en Dohert y tri ed agai n 10 out-brake Sa tterlee in the tu rn I I hairpin but Satterl ee closed the door on h im an d kept th e lead. Dohert y kept probing and two laps lat er found room 10 ge t past in th e roa d-sweepi ng lefthander.turn six. T he lo n g straigh t in to turn seven gave Doh ert y a cha nce 10 get away . an d h e stayed in from to the fini sh. The featured 600cc Supers treet race proved to be a runaway victory for RZ rider Malcolm Hill.
