AU G _3 Frank Garcia rode hi s Honda to th e winner 's circle in th e Pro Am a teu r class after leading hi s h eat from start to fini sh. The 50 main sta rted wit h a fou r-bike pi le-u p in th e first cu rve a nd the third green ligh t saw Ca rr iger move into the fro nt with Ga rcia o n the ins ide a nd Paul Iwana ga a t rig h t flank. Midway th rou gh the race, Ga rcia overtook Ca rriger a nd p u lled away. The 500cc Ex pert heat started wi th 10 to 12 rider s on th e back starti ng lin e. O n th e green , T om Carriger easily took th e lead followed by Da nt e Dambruoso. Frank Garcia, ru nning in third, cu t 10 the inside and shot by Dam bruoso a n d Carriger 10 cap ture th e lead. Dan Moore copied Gar cia 's move to ta ke second. In the main, it was Carriger o ff th e lin e first , bu t a ga in Garcia o u t-ma neuvered him to take first. In th e 250cc Expert event , Cra ig J ohnson o f Salina s bla sted o ff th e lin e into the lead and ran 10 the flag followed by Garcia . Dan Moo re moved bv Garcia 10 finish seco nd. For th ree laps th e first six riders were all bunched together and o n th e fourth lap Ku n tz mounted a fu rious charge . He passed Ga rcia in th e roc kers a nd th en poured it on to pa ss front runner McMillen in th e a ir over the TT j u m p . O nce he was o u t front there was n o ca tch ing hi m. For th e nex t two la ps he len gt hened h is lead a nd took the win with ease. McMillen and Garcia held o n 10 seco nd a nd th ir d wi th Kaw a sak i r id er J a son Neum an co m ing ac ross th e lin e fourth. Garcia was first o u t o f th e ga te in th e seco nd round, but Kuntz wa s right behind, biding hi s time. His op por tu n ity ca me through the tight turns before the TT jump. He shot by Garcia a nd immedi at el y opened up a very healthy lead. Garcia followed Kuntz until th e th ird lap wh en he slid down in a left sweepe r, put himself o u t o f co ntention, a nd let Neuman and Danny Barnett (Hon ) go by to fin ish second - nd th ird . Kunt zcrossed a the fin ish lin e with n o ot he r riders in sigh t a nd easi ly won th e overa ll, Neu man too k seco nd ove ra ll with a 4-2 a nd Ba rn ett was third wi th 5-3. Th e rem a ining lap was a very close race for second among three riders tha t contin ued righ t down to th e fla g. Laidler won th e race for seco nd with T ony Parker (Kaw ) in third a nd Maj or Alford (Ka w) in fourt h . Parker hol esh ot th e secon d mot o a nd stayed o u t in th e lead with Alford a nd Dye defin arel y lett in g th eir presence be kn own. On th e thi rd lap Alford jumped into the lead over th e roc kers a nd left Parker fighting to hold o n to seco nd . On the last lap Dye passed Park er over th e TT jump, o nl y 10 be passe d ri gh t back aga in. Dye set Pa rk er up again and made a no ther pa ss a ttem p t o n th e sweeper j us t before the fini sh lin e, The tenacious Parker came rig h t back aga in a nd shot a head just befo re th e two rid ers took th e checkered flag. Even though Dye fin ish ed thi rd he too k th e overall wi n wit h a 1-3. Alford wa s seco nd wi th 4- 1 a nd Park er was th ird wi th 3-2. Cagiva facto ry rid er Ron Turner and Honda rider T odd Peterson were. a s usual, the focus o f a ttentio n in the 500cc Pro race. T urner ca me o u t of th e ga te in firs t with Peterson on hi s rea r fender. On lap two Peterson slipped by Turner on the right hander before th e roc kers , but he sta lled hi s mo to rcycle a lap later and ga ve th e lead ba ck to Turner. Peter son got bac k underwa y a nd took seco nd with Mike McMillen (Ho n) taking third . The sta rt o f the seco nd race looked lik e a repeat o f the fir st, with Peterson a nd Turner side-by-side around th e first turn . T hrott le problems took T urner o u t of the race o n th e first lap , leaving Peterson 10 ride o u t in fro nt all by himself . The real racing was going o n betwee n Dave Foltz (Hon) a nd Mik e McMillen for seco nd pla ce, On th e la st lap McMillen negotiated th e rockets a little fast er than Foltz an d moved int o second.
