AUG. 7 J ust after qualifying for this year's World Speedway Championship, Sam Ermolenko came to J ohn LaD ouceu r 's Inland Mot o rcycl e Speedway Wednesday . night and blew aw ay th e competition in the Cycle R ider . Inc. Trophy Series Scratch main event. . Ermolenko (Pick Your Part Auto ' Sa lvage/Pacific Coast Laminating/ Ara i/ Jones/American Mi kuni/STP/ Q&E/ R.K . Racing Chai n /AI Reed 's P o lish ing/Fra m e Shop/Kal -G ard/ Car Tunes Weslake) was on song all night long and in the main he was by far the class of th e three-rider field . The field was cu t to three wh en John Sandona threw hi s bik e awa y and broke th e frame in th e Handicap consolation. Ermolenko was o u t o f two on th e sta rt with o ne em p ty. He quickl y gated and opened up a lea d over Mike Faria a nd Lance King. King moved into second o n lap two but could not put a dent into Ermolenko's lead. On lap three Faria tried to come back underneath King for second but co u ldn' t find th e co rrec t combination. He went to the outside on th e fina l lap but dropped well off before th e che ckered. For Ermolenko it was a wheelie and a big lead at the Sid Sutton checkered . much to th e delight of hi s many fans. Shawn McConnell (Brown's Automotive/ Oakley / Be IIl Pe troche m/. Team Swollen /Car Tunes Weslake) turned in a fine ride to win the Handicap main over Ermo len ko. After taking Tony Briggs on la p one. MeConnell went af ter leader J eff Johnson th e second trip aro u nd the fast dirt oval. It took until turn four but it was there that McConnell found the hole he had been looking for and burst through on th e inside for th e lead. Johnson was camped in second but Ermolenko was steam ing through the pack a nd he shot into seco nd on lap four. Errn ol enko was riding a radical outside line but ran out o f time before he could la sso the happy McConnell. Johnson held off Briggs to claim third spot. Doug Benj amin put hi s Weslak e into th e lead in th e Second Division main from th e IO-yard line and never looked ba ck. Benjamin sco red hi s fir st 1985 IMS win by a wide margin over Ri ck Vanderham and Walt Farnum. Craig Furman (Jawa ) ran a way from th e pack to pi ck up th e trophy for th e Third Di vision main. Johnn y Walker took second wi th Mark Hately third. Trinon Cirello (H awaiian Punch / Bobby Schwartz/Oak ley/ BelllCirello Racing) won yet a no ther main even t by easily defeating Dave Busb y a nd G reg Hancock in th e Junior Speedway First Division main even t.
