McLain tops Ft. CalhounMX By Brad and Sharon Jones FORT CALHO UN , NE, J ULY 21 Former midwest racer and now Californian Mike McLain won a hard fought race in the competitive I25cc B class at Ft . Ca l- 36 houn on July 21. McLain, on h is way to th e Po nca City Nationals, stopped off for so me local ra cing a n d ca me away wi th th e big win. In the first moto, Da vid Antinaro took the ho leshot and left th e pack in hi s wak e. Wh ile Antina ro was wa y o u t front , Dan Otoupal, T odd Winter , Mike McLain and Er ic Kohl were a ll rubbing elbo ws for seco nd p lac e. McLain, however, sh o wed his Ca liforn ia experien ce a nd slam med h is wa y to seco nd by th e end o f th e m oto. In mo to two Antinaro go t th e ho leshot, but McLain was showi ng th e fir e in h is eyes a nd hooked on to Antinaro's rear fender for several lap s before making h is move. Ant inaro got up to fini sh seco nd a head of T odd Winter an d Eric Kohl. As u su al th e I 25cc Expert class proved to be ultra entertaining as Mike Boston bla sted out of the gate for the lead. Greg Wurstor foll o wed closely fo r a couple of lap s, bu t Boston inc hed away for a 'co m forta ble lead . Bo ston was tr ip li ng a set of tricky stadium whoops a nd crashed, bu t he got going j ust in ti m e to keep h is lead over Wurslor. Boston agai n pu lled away for the wi n over Wurs lo r and Doug Mu rra y. In rno to two. it was Den ny Step henson ta ki ng a huge hol eshot o ff the gate over Wursl or, Mu rr a y a nd Po li ng . Bosto n ga ted poorly an d was o n th e mo ve until h e ca ugh t up with Mark Bolten. Bosto n passed Bo lten on the seco nd lap, but Bolten returned th e favor a few turns lat er. In th e meantime, Stephenson was reall y cooking o u t fro nt while Wurslor seeme d co ntent with seco nd . Boston finally got arou nd Bolten , but the fro nt runners were too far gone to ca tch. Wurslor took the overall with a 2-2 an d Stephen son wa s seco nd o vera ll wi th a 4-1. In the 250cc Experts it was Dan New ell tak in g th e lead wi th Mark Pol in g , Mik e Da ly and Doug Murra y givi ng chase. All eyes we re o n Mike Boston, wh o was la st on the start . bu t sliced th rough th e pack with a vengeance. Boston was totally a weso me as he passed all 10 riders in three la p s for th e lead an d the wi n. Dan Newell crashe d o n o ne o f th e big stadium I j umps and handed h is seco nd place fini sh to Murray. Boston sa id, "Those g uys running th e sta rt ing ga te tri cked file o n the ga te. I en ded up jam me d up agai ns t it. " In round two , Murray was out fro nt with Newell and Boston both only a bikelength behi nd. Newell ' passed Murray on th e seco nd lap an d sta rte d to pull a way whi le Boston tri ed every th in g to ge t by Murray befo re finally doing so three laps later. Boston closed in on Newell , but Ne we ll held h is lines for th e rnoto win. New ell was extreme ly happy, co m me nting, " It su re feels good to beat Mike (Bosto nj.even if it was just o ne m oto. H e is th e best a round; everybody knows it!" In th e Open Ex pert class it wa s Brad J o n es in th e lead wi th Pat P ile fo llowin g a few seco nds behind. On th e las-t lap Jones developed a flat tire a nd Pile just missed ta ki ng th e win by in ches. In moto two it wa s Pile with th e hol esh ot wi th Stan Em erson in seco nd a nd J ones th ird. J ones passed Emerso n o n Look O u t Mounta in and a Pi le mis ta ke while la nd ing o ff th e big ca me l back saw J ones kn ocking o n hi s door. Two laps later . Pile a lmost lo wsided and J ones slipped past for the wi n. Mar k Peterson wo rk ed to thi rd and on the la st la p cha rged past P ile for second place money. Den n y Stephe nson had no p roblem s smoki ng th e combined Min i A a nd B classes by lead i ng every inch of th e way. Second p lace was up fo r g ra bs and several riders took a sta b a t it . J aso n Bo yer ran in seco nd for a lap, bu t dropped to th e back of the pack o n lap two . Bria n Sorenson, riding the B class, took over second only to h av e Justin Otto take it away from h i m a lap lat er. In m oto two . it was Stephenson out fro nt w i th Steve Ba tes in seco nd. Roskell ey was th e favorite to wi n o n hi s ho me tr ack , bu t a bad crash wh ile a ttemp ting to jump a set of triples in practic e me ssed him up for the rest of th e day. When the P ro s lined u p for mo to one R oskelley was th ere, bu t the real race wou ld be between Davis a nd Mu nson. The ga te dropped a nd fou nd Davi s o ver shooting turn one. Mun- , so n a nd his Northern Power Sports' Suzuki fou nd th em selves in th e lea d . Davis worked h is wa y th rough th e park a nd by th e halfwa y m ark wa s cha llengi n g his An cho rag e C ycl e Sa les' tea m mate Kell y Butler for seco nd . The two Yamaha-moun ted racers fo u g h t the rest ofthe moto, but Davis co u ld n' t get by a determined Bu tler. T heir d ice brought th em cl ose to th e leader a t the end bu t Munson held on to fir st. The seco nd moto belonged to Da vis as h e led from beginning to en d, unchallen ged by anyone. As' it wa s in mo to one, th e real race was fo r second - th is ti me bet ween Butler a nd Munso n. And again Butler h eld o nto second until th e fini sh, leav ing Mun so n with third. The three racers tied o n overall poin ts, b ut th e order wa s determined by th e second moto finish so it en ded Davis, Butler a nd th en Munson. Jim Stewart decided to bring h is 1975 CZ 250 out to help cele bra te the 10th an n iversa ry.
