In th e 125cc Nov ice class, Mod esto 's Monty Own bey conti nued hi s local wi n n ing strea k. In th e first mot o , Ownbey an d Honda r ider Er ic H enley bo th drag raced away from th e pack, pulling away 10 race eac h o ther by the end o f the first lap. Mod esto 's Ro y Vnld ez.wa s in third p lace w he n Yamaha rider Mike Quasch ni ck passed on a . tricky section. of jumps in the back section o f th e co urse. About midway th rough the race, H enley's rapid pace was sta rt ing 10 tak e its toll on O wn bey , a nd Henley sta rte d to p u ll a way by a .. .... few feet each la p . On th e last lap, three co rn ers before the fini sh , Ownbev cut underneath Henley and flat 0':11 beat H en lev 10 th e ch eckered flag. Donal d Fra n k lin (Hon) wo n th e Pro class m oney, battling it out with Honda rider Pa t Sparks and Modesto 's George Hop pe r. Frank lin wo n th e- firs t mot o p u lli ng a way. but in th e second moto, Sparks lea ped into the lead and it looked lik e he was goi ng 10 p u ll a n upset, bu t he sudden ly spu n his H on da ou t in a fast sweeper. Frankl in was o n Spa rks' jail , saw h is cha nce, and was gone . Sparks ended u p with seco n d for th e n igh t an d H op pe r took th ird . In 250cc J unior class action , George Kn ott sto le th e h oIcsh ot o n hi s Yamaha, bu t G reg Hunter got by in the firs t corner. Hanford 's Gi lbert Kwol ek followed in th ird . Com ing o ut o f a sharp corner, Knott hit th e gas a lill ie ea rlier and repassed for th e lead . A few laps into the race, Kn ott had pulled away some w hen Hunter stuck h is foot in to a trackside ti re that left him ta ngled u p for a few seco nds . A lap la ter, Knott had .to slow down when traffic held h im up. Hunter saw this, and no w riding with m ore abandon, caugh t back up, bu t th e smoo ther ridi ng Knott kept his usual lines a nd h el d o ff Hunter 10 the finish . Kwol ek en ded up with a th ird . . Come the secon d race Kwol ek a nd H u nt er immediately went a t each others th ro a ts with Fresno's Robbie T ol er (Yam) third. At the end of the first lap, Hunter slid by Kwo lek o n.a fas t sweeper. A few corners la ter, however, Hunter got tangl ed up with a fa llen rider, a nd again Kwo lek was in the lead. By mid-race, H unter had ag ain ca ught up to Kwolek and started an attack fro m behi nd . A few feet before a jump in th e bac k sectio n , Hunter made hi s move on Kwo lek. Comi ng across the fin ish , Hunter had th e lead, wi th Kwol ek hot o n h is rear wheel for second . Toler followed in for a third. Eigh t class entrants made for pl enty o f ac tio n in addit ion to th at put on by the fro nt ru n ni ng McConn in th e firs t rno to, a nd th en Flores in - th e seco nd. For exa mple, Danny Boles, sponsored by Team US / MOIO-X Fox a nd Pa ul Turner Ra cing , was back in actio n on hi s Pal o Alto-based YZ Yamaha. Despite a pain fu l leg inj ury limp from a n end -over-end ge t-o ff a week ago , h e was th ick into ac tio n for the first two laps of eac h m oto. Dan was a ble 10 hold o ff a ll o thers to gain a pa ir o f th irds o n th e eve n ing. The rid er gi ving Bol es th e biggest cha llenge, until h e fell , was Eric Ma shbir (H on) . Early cha llengers Bol es, Mashbir a nd Dan Co le a ll slip ped backw ard either from being passed by Flores o n h is move from fifth to second, or from sp ills a nd near sp ills.
