Clouds threatened all day but broke aw a y about race time a n d 145 racers cha lle nged an ear ly tacky co urse which became th e black , sh iny gr oo ve favored by so me for th e m ain events. Sal Hoffman dial ed the start o f th e 500cc P ro ma in a fter sett ing a new six lap h eat reco rd a nd co pped hi s first main even t of th is series. He was shadowed by Nationa l Camel Pro Expert Alex J orgensen for the co m plete 15 laps, bu t J orgy cou ldn ' t pass. Chad f el icio was a so lid third whi le Mark Key, Ken Ne tto and P.J . San ch ez wrestl ed for fourth. T his ba ttl e resu lted in ro ugh rid in g charges a nd an o fficial protest , but an on track co~ m ittee awarded Key the fourth POSI tion. Fanning conquers Green Valley RR By Scott Schaefer NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX, JULY 21 Novice Whitney Fanning made the most of continually chang- ing track conditions at the Green Valley Racewa y Su n day by taking trophies in eight cl asses. Only half o f th e scheduled races were finished w hen the rain ca me, sen di ng man y rid ers packing. f ann in g 's sta min a p roved to be th e tri ck to a record I day . f anning co llec ted first in B Su pe rbike a nd D Prod uctio n; seconds in formula 2, B Pro d u ct io n a n d C Pro duction. He also pl aced th ird in A Production , D Superbike a nd f ormul a One. He won all of h is races o n Yamahas. Th e formu la Tw o Comb in ed opened th e day with War n e Even setting a blistering pace. After th e ope n ing laps, h e opened a substantial lead with Rick Tetrick, ' Jack Yost a nd Michael Ho p pes battling for second. Even won by abo ut 15 seconds. A P rod uction saw a hin d run between Meri l Moen a n d J a m ie J ames. Moen led th e fir st six la ps by o n ly two or three seconds whe n J ames made h is move a t th e en d o f th e back stra ig ht. He dov e under Moen, but ran o u t o f tra ck. John Estes used his CBllOO Honda to put in a smooth consistent ride dropping only two points to take the overall win a t the California Motorcycle Rallies (CMR) Roadrunner Ra ll y. The Roadrunner Rall y, wh ich was th e first in a ser ies o f Street bike Enduros, ra n through th e mountain a nd desert hi ghways of th e Los Padres and th e.Angeles National f orests. It co nsis ted of two loops, th e first being 190 miles long a nd the second being . S h t l ! C 135 m iles. T he different class es brought o u t a wid e va rie tv o f street bikes, from Ven ture Royal es ( 0 Ninj a 600s wi th (he bi g bikes giving th e sma ll can yon screa mers a ru n for th eir money. Estes, ridi ng in th e Spon 75l-0pen cla ss, mad e h is o n ly m istake at th e seco nd check, bei ng two minutes lat e. But th e batt le for second between Bruce Reilly (H on 1000) a nd Ken Martin (Kaw 1000) wa s going down to th e wire with eac h running on th e same minute a nd both hoping ( 0 nail th e tiebrea ker. Martin edged Reill y by 7.0 seconds a t th e ti ebreaker to take second. In th e most co n tested class, th e Sport 45 1-750, Mi ke Estrada (Yam 750), Sam Winters (H o n 500) and Mike Eri ckson (H o n 700) all got off (0 a good start with each on ly making mi nor errors on the first loop unti l chec k six. Stanley received severa l p laudits from th e crowd after winning the 80cc A main , th e I25cc A m ain a nd th e 250cc B main even t. Stanl ey p ost ed th e sixth fastest time o f th e even ing on his 125 which was a lso victorious in the 250cc B main over Todd Derringer and Steve McCauley. Another interesting race was the increasingly popular Over 30 class-ru n off. Trophy dash winner Mi ke Bu dschad t (Tri 750) d id the dirty deeds in the 10 lap fin al to put Dan Stan ley (Yam 500) into th e runner -up spot. Strong (Sea tt le Hon ) hooked up best at the start of th e 250cc Expert m oney main and led Green who was ru nning second and was fishing for an opening on the q uaner mile oval. Eschwig followed Green and Strong and at one point in the race mad e a five way swapfest for th e lead in an incredible five abreas t d uel. T he battl e raged u ntil th e fifth lap when Stro ng a n d Green pulled away a nd left Roose to fen d off a pesky La nce Strong, who came fro m way back to sett le into fourth with laps remain in g . Strong co uldn 't catch Roose, bu t did ge t a spectac u la r view o f broth er Kirk lo sing the lead to Green on th e 12th lap with o n ly 100 feet to th e checkered n ag. Strong was ridin g co n fide n t, but a llowed G reen to cu t in side a n d take it th e remaining d istance after trailing th e entire ra ce. Green and Strong agai n put on a nother spectacular show for the fans in what may have been the best race of the season .
