The race , sponsored by Las Vegas Motocross Club, was moved up to southern Utah to avoid the searing heat in Las Vegas. Instead, heat a nd humidity greeted the IOO-plus racers who con verged for the competition on this sunny Sunday" Faulkner. who just moved up from th e Min i class, proved he's also fast on th e bigger bikes by taking the early lead in both motos and putting it to th e rest of th e field . Craig Cummings and Chris Pocino rode hard for second and third each tim e out a nd th ese three were th e cream of this lar ge class. In th e Intermed iate class, John ny Day had a ll he co uld handle from local U tah rider Geor ge Orton a nd from John McDonough , a desert racing ace. After so me hard racing in th e heat and humidity, Day managed to win both motos. McDonough finished second and Orton claimed third. The BOcc Stock Novice class produced so me so lid racing a nd intense co m pe tition amo ng th e fro nt ru nners. Jeff Hodge and Rich Haynes raced wheel-to-wheel and traded positions several times in moto one, until Haynes just squeaked by to finish third. Kerhonen recov ered and raced to third place in moto two. Final results had Pocino, Hoak , and Kerhonen in trophy positions. Gene Ramsey used good, consistent racing to finish first in th e 250cc Novice class when it counted - in the final results. Although he didn 't win either .rno to , his second and fourth-place finishes were good for the overall trophy. The 250cc Novice classes are historically big and craz y, and this one was reall y topsy-turvy. with first moto winner Scott Bassett unable to crack the top four in moto two and second moto winner Ken Teeters carrying a sixth-place burden from moto one. Ramsey rode hard eno ug h in both motos to sta y in the top group and waited for his main co m pe tito r s to self-des truct , Ron Goodwin centerpunched th e tr iples, a nd rnoto one was h istory for him. Moto two witnessed a Mik e Gibson cras h and Scott Bassett with problems also. Through a ll of th is, Ramsey stay ed consistent enough to capture first place. Bassett finished in seco nd, Ken Teeters closed with a ru sh to tak e third. Mike Gibson was fou rt h a nd Scott Sno w cap tured th e last tro p h y po sition. Two riders turned th e heat of th e day into a heated battle for th e overall in th e Open Pro class as LeeVern Berry and Dave Molder sp lit moto wins in th e big bik e ca tegory, Each then went on to take the overall top spot in the remaining 125 and 250cc Pro races . Molder came out with the better portion of the cash pa yback, as his win in the second Open Pro moto was the deciding facto ry a nd he went home with two ofthe three overall victories in the Professional ranks. Starting out th e first 500cc Pro moto, Berry grabbed th e holeshot with Lynn Hyde and Molder in tow. a nd the trio im media tely set up a vicious fight for the front position. Berry powered his Perry Bicek/Rice Cycles Honda into th e lead for the fir st few laps while H yde sta yed ri g h t on hi s rearfender. Molder went down trying to get aro und H yde and later in th e rnoto took a no the r trip into th e soi l try ing to tak e th e lead. This ended a ny chance of re-cat ching the Ber ry /Hyde battle up front. Berry then proceeded to fend off Hyde's effo rts and in th e latter laps pulled to a five seco nd lead before the checkers flew giving him th e moto ahead of H yde, Molder a nd T on y Ul ric h. Round two sa w Molder gra b th e hol eshot on his tir ed Yamaha Shop YZ490 while Hyde and Berry trailed closely. Molder soon pulled a way from th e tra iling duo and left th em to a fierce battle for th e ru n ne r-u p posi tio n. As Mo lder m ot ored o u t fron t virtually u nchallenged, Berry tri ed everything to get aro u nd H yde b ut all to no a vail. In the final lap Berry tried o ne last shot fo r seco nd and the overa ll win , but went down trying to st uff inside o f H yde o ne co rner from th e end. Mo lder ro lled in wi th the moto an d overa ll with H yde placin g second on bo th co u nts. A dejected Berr y pi cked himself up a nd came across for th ird a hea d o f Ulrich . Kim Bendigo a nd Curt H yde behind. As Stork tried to work his way into the lead on th e opening lap he went down on th e shortened circuit and wound up dead las t as th e pack finished lap one. Molder then put a good margin over the battle for second place between Greg H yde and Bendigo. Bendigo had th e second spot by less than a bikelength while Curt Hyde stalked not too far behind in fourth . This trio fought the dust and each other for the entire motor. but neither could better his position as Bendigo held firm to come in well behind Molder for second; but just ahead of Greg Hyde and Curt Hyde. In fifth came a charging Stork. who sli pped pa st U lrich a nd Scott Sal veson in the late lap s for the position. Round two saw Stork go through the first lap without any trouble to gi ve Molder a serious challenge for th e moto win. The two pulled away from the pack and set up their own race with Stork taking the lead and Molder holding right behind. This time Molder had to just make sure he put in a good finish a nd not hurt the motorcycle so he made sure nothing went wrong and kept with Stork until th e fin ish . Stork took the moto with Molder second, bUI tha t was good eno ugh to give Molder his second overall win of the afternoon. Bendigo fought off Curt H yde and Greg H yde. once again . th is time for third which brought h im to seco nd overall a head of Stork whil e Curt H yde grabbed fourth a head of Greg H yde with his final moto fourth. Berr y's big moments came in the l25c c Pro catego ry wh ere he mastered th e course and fought off Stork in eac h rnoto for th e overall. In round one Berry gr abbed the holeshot with Cl int Ov erman, Stork, H enry Jordon and Scott Ray fighting for second. Ray slipped into second ahead o f Stork on the first lap then on the second la p took a trip over the bars, g iving Stork second and a chance to try and catch Berry . Although Stork closed the gap somewhat on the leader, he was never able to seriously threaten Berry for the lead. Berry motored off with the moto comfortably ahead of Stork, who in turn was well ahead of Overman in third. In a fierce battle for fourth , Ra y, Mark Mueller and Todd Willis were trading positions when Willis went down over a jump while both Mueller and Ra y landed right on top of him. Then on the very next lap Mueller and Ra y tangled with each other in mid-air and Mueller went down hard into his gas tank. splitting the tank and leaving himself doubled over in pa in. Ra y remounted also in great pa in . bu t managed to roll across in eighth. Henry Jordon and H eath Goodsell picked up the four-five slots in th e end. Round two saw much less crashing on th e shorte ned circuit and once again Berry took th e lead while Stork fou ght all the wa y, only to wind up second.
