CA, J UN E 6 Suzuki pilot Monty Owhnbey (D&H Suzuki /Jim Owhnbey a nd Son's Trucking) put it to the troops in the 125cc Beginner class by winn in g both m otos to beat out Fresno's j eff McCrory and Hondamounted Eri c Henl ey for th e overall win in ac tio n a t Liul e Okie. In 250cc Pro action at th e newl y improved supercross track lo cal hero and Yam ah a r id er Jim Ellis (fres h back from stron g performances a t Mammoth Mountain a n d th e U .S.G .P. ) shot fr om th e gat e and grabbed th e h ol esh ot. Fell ow Yamaha ride r a n d Fresn o resident Dan Webb h ad co nt ro l o f seco n d pl a ce with Donald Franklin h o lding hi s own in thi rd . Ellis began to bu ild a substant ial lead, but he didn 't back ofL for a seco n d a s he vow ed th e crowd with hi s fla wl ess riding. Coming into a su pe r tight hairpin corner and across th e chec kered , Ellis took the moro ea sily with Webb tak ing second and Franklin th ird. The m oney wa s on Ellis for th e seco n d race and wh en th e s ta n in g gate dropped, it was Ell is again with the holeshot . Pat Sparks slid his PJ-I Oils sponsored Honda into second place with Webb in third. Sparks an d Webb soon got in volved in a hot duel with Webb t r y i n g 10 c ut und er Sparks wh en ever th e cha nce a rose, only to have Sparks sla m th e do or in hi s face. By midra ce Webb had gotten by Sparks for second, but it was much 100 la te to gain a ny ground on Ellis. Franklin , who got a bad stan, was ru n ning fourth a nd soon started putting heat on Sparks. He didn't hav e quite enough a n d the moro ended with Franklin in fourth . T he 250cc Junior cla ss was act ion packed as Yamaha rider Greg Hunter zoomed into th e lead, bur went wid e allowing Darin Vanderpoo l to knife underneath. Hunter. however, im medially retalia ted and took the lead right back . Van de rpool soon fo und himself in fourth pl ace a s Merced 's Robert Lee Chew and Yamaha ride r G eorge Knott passed for seco nd a n d thi rd .
