Orr BOYD, TX, J UN E 29 After a six-week layoff while recuperating from injuries incu rred in a tus sle with a th reewheeler, G ary Kidd came back 42 .. to race o n two whee ls at Mike Kidd 's Boyd Ra ceway. He said it really felt good to be back ou t th ere and p roved it w he n h e put o n a hard ride to finish third in Open shan track co m pe tition before winn in g th e Open TT main event. With promot er Mike Kidd a n no u nci ng a .$1000 bonus for th e season's high p oint Pro rider, Gary is getting down to serio us racing. The 80cc class go t th e ra cers roilin g a n d Greg T ea gue won the sh a n track hea t race a hea d of Scott Williams a nd Tim Kay. Will iams got th e holeshot in th e m a in event an d led for th e fir st five laps. Teag ue put th e pressure on a nd Will iams stayed too close to th e pole, a nd got h is bik e into th e ro ugh din o n th e in side in turn four o n lap six. Teague was righ t the re to ta ke over th e lea d, but on th e ne xt la p he slid o u t co m ing out of turn th ree and went down wit h just avera lap to go. Will iams took th e che ckered flag firs t foll owed by Kay a nd Derick Whitener, but nobod y went to th e Victory Ci rcle. All th e riders di sp layed their sportsma nship and co nce rn by circl in g th e tra ck to th e accident a n d staye d until Teague was a ble to ge t u p and wa lk from th e tra ck before returning to th e lin e to clai m their tro p hies. j a ck Surber won th e l 25cc shan track ' heat race foll ow ed by Cha d McC ra cken, but Ed Meyer got the ea rly lead in the ma in event. Su rbe r ran close to Meyer for three la ps an d th en p assed on th e o u tside goi ng into tu rn three. Meyer ca me o u t o f turn four with a narrow lead a nd th is was repeated in eac h tu rn until th e fin al lap, wh en Meyer was a ble to hold o nto th e lead a nd take th e win. After a ba ck row sta rt, C ha d McCra cken ca ugh t th e leaders a nd on th e fin al lap crossed th e lin e a lmos t side -byside with Surber to fi n ish in third pl a ce. T he first Open short tra ck h ea t was won by Ph il Darcy a head o f Andy West a n d Tim H ampton. Kidd won the seco n d heat aft er swapping th e lead three tim es in th e last lap with Charlie Orr. Karl Klement Fordsp onsored Dar cy led th e main event wire-to-wire wh ile the battle between Orr a nd Kidd for seco nd p lace was a repeat of th e second heat. On lap six, Orr pulled o u t of turn two a head for keeps a n d sta rted ga in ing o n Darcy, who wa s o n ly a hea d by tw o bik e lengths. Klem ent got th e hol eshot in th e ma in event ahead o f Ka u fman a nd McQuaid. On lap one , Ka ufman took over the lead going into th e hairpi n turn , b u t Klem ent went insi de in turn four to finish th e lap in front . George Ga ldeen pulled up from sixt h to fourth on lap o ne to pressure McQuaid and th en was joined by Terry Ne wman in a th ree-m an battle for th ird place. Newman passed G al deen insi de th e right-hand turn on lap th ree, before going aro u n d th e o u tside o f McQuaid in the righthander o n lap four; but Newman slipped off th e groove a nd fell wh en h e tr ied to get by Klem ent in turn three. Karl Klement Ford-sponsored Phil Darcy took th e early lead in th e semi, . but th e race was red-flagged a t the end of the first lap wi th three rid ers down. Mark Russo led into th e first turn o n th e restart foll owed by Qu inn a nd Dar cy. Darcy p a ssed Quinn on th e ins ide o n lap one as j ohn Gladwill mo ved up to ch allenge Quinn from fou rt h pl ace. Sullering Irom a sore wrist j ohn Rob ertson (Yam) dropped 98 for fourth. Sunda y's two loops of I I sections p roved much eas ier than Saturday's three loops o f 12. Low point score r on Sunday was Robertson, who cleaned half o f th e sections to move into th ird overa ll. Coming up one p oint short of fir st o vera ll wa s Webster (Yam ), but dropping 57 points wa s good en ough to hang onto first overa ll for Pritch ard. Three points separa ted Bru ce Davis, Rich Spruell (Mitch Mayes Yamaha ) a n d Bill y Hunter in the Amateur's a fter Saturday . Mounted on a 1979 Bulraco , Davis increased his margin by 16 marks to collect his second win of th e year. After two days both Hunter a nd Spruell had 21 cleans, but Hunter secu red second with 86 points to Spruell's 89. Ex-desert rac er G ary Anderson ea rn ed a nothe r win in th e Novice cla ss to move into the Amateur class. Droppin g 53 marks a nd 35 cleans.
