Finishing and taking th e win was Davis followed by Brundage. Mabery, and Perry. Nikolakopulos rocketed to th e front of th e p a ck followed by a n o ther Yamaha rider Ro n Stebe a nd Kaw a saki riders Don McGrath a nd john Harmon. By th e en d ofthe fir st lap. Nikolakopulos still held th e lead, but th e third sp ot had been ta ken over by H armon. Stebe still held seco n d. but on hi s tail a n d moving up fa st was . Harm on. H armon was riding aggressively but began dropping off th e pace a nd faded o u t o f the top five. Runn in g from behi nd a nd moving up fast was Ya ma ha rider Allan Carlson, who was able to successfu lly capture seco nd pl ace. Carlson bega n movi ng up very close to Nikolakopulos with McGrath keeping righ t up with the pace. T he three riders stayed wi t hin inches of each other. At this point. Carlso n started to make his move for the lead; going wid e. h e m isjudged a turn lettin g McGrath in sid e for seco nd. As th e trio mad e th eir wa y up th e ra th er long uphill , McG rath went down . a nd in doing so surrendered th e number two sp o t back to Carlson. At th is point th e top three rider s wer e Nik olakopulos, Carlso n a n d Steb e. Srebe started to p ut a lot of p ressure o n Ca rl so n. who wa s showin g signs of fat igue. Sieb e was fin all y a ble to sli p by Carlson for seco nd. H e th en wasted no ti me on setti ng a bl azing; trail a fter Nikol akopul os, Ca rlson faded even fa rth er. letting Yamaha rider. j ose Gonzalez by for thi rd. H e th en sta rte d a fter Stebe, but neither rider was a ble to accom p lis h th e ta sk. At th e end . it was Nikol ak opulos, Siebe a nd Gonza lez. Tim Hannan. mounted o n a Kawasaki. shot up th e start hill to ca p tu re th e hol eshot. H e was foll owed closel y by Yamaha rid ers j on Miller an d Pat Crose. a nd H onda rider jim Cu nn in gh am , a n d Brunda ge. By the seco nd la p . H anna h had about a six second lead o n th e p ack. Brundage. riding lik e a wild man. . began picking off riders and moving through th e pack to get by Miller for third. Shortly a fter tha t, he wa s able to start working on Hanna. Crose and Miller exch a nged positions a n d Miller took ov er third. Fourth place rider Cunningham made a ni ce m ove on Miller to take control o f th e number three spot. But up front th e ac tion wa s inten se. With Hanna sti ll leading, Brunda ge began mo ving in on h im a t a ra te of two seco nds a lap a nd by th e fo u rt h lap was on his rea r fender. Brunda ge stayed th ere for one lap a n d was forced o u tside wh en a n a ttem pted p ass failed ; he lost ground but was a ble to m ak e it up a lap later. Brun-dage ree led in H annah and wait ed for th e righ t ti me to stri ke. T he two entered the tu rn before the lo ng ro ugh uphill. and the two d ra g raced to the top with Brundage taking over th e lead. From then o n the race stayed much the same with Bru ndage taking the w in followed by H anna and Mill er. T he cra sh took hi m o u t of th e race but he ca me o ut o f it ok a y. A hea vy favori te in this race was Yamaha-mounted Mike Pasca rell a . but a first turn p ileup ended tha t.
