Bruce 'C lark and"Gibson. Goodwin, who finished third in moto one, never looked back as he led from wire to wire for the victory. Gibson pressured him on the last lap and finished a close second. Overall results had Gibson winning, with Goodwin in second and Desert Honda's Tashiro third. Junior cycles also competed today. Carey Hart was really on the gas and smoked both motos to win the combined races by a large margin each time out. RolofffakesARRA at Willow Springs By Lori Tyson ROSAMOND, CA, JUNE 2 Earl Roloff again devastated most of the competition at the American Road Racing Association's Willow Springs meet, ... .. 48 taking a total of three victories in a wind, crash-marred day. Roloff added a second and third place finish in the 600cc Super Stock and 600cc Stock Production classes, respectively. Steve Cardillo took the early lead in the 600cc Stock Production race. with Gary Tatsumi and Roloff just a shadow behind. Entering turn nine. on the last lap, Granada Yamaha/ Advanced Mototech/Dunlop-sponsored Tatsumi went from third into th e lead. "We were both waiting to make our move," said Tatsumi, "I saw a backmarker ahead and decided it was time to go, so I went inside both of th em." The winning margin at th e flag was ever so slight for Tatsumi, with Roloff in second; Cardillo was in third. Roloff led th e start of Open Stock Production, but was soon challenged by Doug Toland, on a Cycle Tune Yamaha FJIIOO. Toland moved up from a third-row start to take second ' by lap two of the race, passing secondplace Kenny Kopecky in turn nine. Roloff continued to lead, but a rule imposed after numerous crashes early in the day (stating that there would be no passing in turn three due to a strong tailwind) continued to frustrate th e other rid ers trying to make up time. Many were stuck behind slower riders, unable to pass until well beyond the turn. Toland's time behind Kopecky allowed Roloff to get away; Toland was unable to get any closer than four seconds behind. Roloff took the win with Toland a lonely second; Kopecky was 10seconds back in third. Cardillo led the start of the 600cc Modified Production race, but had Roloff and Tatsumi to contend with once more. This time around, Roloff moved earlier, in turn eight of lap five , but Cardillo would have none of that - he tried to regain the lead in the turn-two sweeper, by trying the inside of Roloff. "We were dead even until Cardillo tried to close the door on me and hit his muffler on the ground and got totally sideways," said Roloff. That gave Roloff enough of an advantage to holdon to th e lead and take the win. Cardillo still finished a very close second, with Tatsumi in third. The Open Modified Production race again saw Roloff out front with Tolandqu ickly nabbing second from Kopecky . But in passing Kopecky, . Toland leaned the FJ over too far , ground too many parts, tucked the front en d , and cra shed unhurt in one of the easiest turn-nine getoffs in a long time. Roloff won by nine seconds . over Kopecky. Jeff Sterns led Open Superstreet until lap seven when he retired with a possible broken cam. Kopecky took over from there, not even aware he was the. leader, and rode a troubl efree race to tak e the win. Terry Statum took Hesh Bohrer's Cycle City Yamaha to the 600c c Superstreet victory over Roloff and David Morris in one of the races that saw multipl e crashes. Although riding an RZ350 lately, Statum is a four-stroke afficianado, and was ecstatic about the opportunity to pilot one again. He rode a steady, sm art race taking the lead on lap five. Chuck Graves had fallen in turn nine on the third lap, taking Ed Toomey with him . Graves ' bike laid on the track for the remainder of the race , making for treacherous going in one of the fastest sections of the cou rse. Statum finished four seconds ahead of Roloff and Morris took third. Fourth-place' Nigel Gale, usually one of th e top contenders, had suspension problems that were so bad, he went home after ' the event, stating that th e bike was too dangerous to ride. . Bill DeBere won yet another 450cc Box Stock race, leading the event by a huge margin when it was red-fl agged on lap six after a rider crashed in turn seven. The finishing order was decided at the last completed lap - DeBere was first, with Ra y Carson second and Don Warren third. Results 600 ss : 1. Terry Statum (Yam); 2. Earl Roloff (Kaw); 3. Singer hums to Las Vegas MX win By Dick Goodwin LAS VEGAS , NV, JUNE 2 Frank Singer used a . pair of steady second-place finishes to walk away with the top prize in the 125cc Novice class today at Las Vegas Motocross Park. Singer, who started out midpack in both motos, worked his way through the field, taking advantage of mistakes ' and crashes by his main competitors and turning his 'consistent riding into the first-place trophy for th e day . First mota winner Jimmy Rampa managed second overall. Dixie Kawa saki 's Craig Cummings, th e prerace favorite, crashed hard on the white lap during moto one but recovered to finish fourth . He dusted the class in the second moto to wind up third for the day. Chris Capurro finished in fourth. The Veterans class was also in action in this last race before the summer break. Intermediate rider Lynn Nicholson was the overall winner for day among the Vets. Steve Ireland rode two perfect motos to win the Vet Novice class; Jac Lindell finished second. Honda pilot Mike Gibson turned in 1-2finishes to win the 500cc Novice class overall. Gibson was engaged in a furious duel for the lead with Alex Hill in the first moto until Hill went down and mechanical trouble forced him to retire. This left Gibson with a big lead and an easy win over holeshot artist Larry Tahsiro. Ron Goodwin blasted to the lead in moto two, followed closely by 2501NT: 1. Terry Thomas; 2 . Angelo Iannucci; 3 . IDAHO CITY, ID, JUNE 1-2 KTM-mounted Ron Dillon turned in a clean ride on Sunday and some hot special test times to edge Barstow-to-Vegas hotshot Jeff Miller (Kaw) by a scant 23 seconds in capturing the two-day overall at the 1985 Idaho Ci ry 100 Enduro. After a rainy and rugged Saturday, Dillon had but 27 seconds on Miller when Sunday dawned bright and fair. By the end of the second day, the Dillon Cycle/Hi-Point-sponsored 250cc MX rider had lost only four of those seconds to the hard-charging Miller who rode his Girl's Cycle Sale 200cc KDX to victory in that class and second overall, 23 seconds behind Dillon . . Dillon may have had something to prove - at least to himself. He's had a hard time of it in h is quest of the last couple of years on the qualifier trail. "It was great!" Dillon said. "Jeff and I just had a ball on the last loop on Sunday1He'd overshoot a corner a little and I'd go past him and he'd just be whooping and hollerin 'I Then, I slid one kinda wide and he'd get back by me . .. we'd pass slower guys on both sides at once sometimes. It was reall y fun l" Dillon and Miller came cooking in off on thai last loop on Sunday with a comfortable I0 minutes or so to spare. Both men, along with quite a few riders on both the A and B schedules zeroed the course on Sunday. Betterthan-perfect traction and loops which were worn-in and " like rails" made those who either rode only on Sunday or stuck it out for two days feel they'd participated in something very special. One such special feeling belonged to SIDRA Senior Novice champ from 1984,Arnie Gonzales (Kaw 250). Gon-
