Duronso wins MBMCHare Scrambles By Paul Nielson BELLINGHAM, WA, MAY I I Yamaha-mounted Ly le Duron- . so slogged his way dow n steep gravel incl ines a nd up rugged logging roads, not to mention h aving to overcome so me fierce com peti tion, to win this year's MBMC Northfork Hare Scrambles. This year's ra ce was particularl y tough o n riders, . as many got ca ug h t up in a bottlen eck on on e of th e rougher parts o f th e co u rse, which force d a re-s ta rt. On top o f that , Duronso didn 't see m to have much chance of wi n ni ng eithe r, sin ce the ea rl y laps were domin at ed by Ru ss Norman , who lat er experie nced brake p robl em s, wh ich gave Duronso the ove ra ll w in. Norman , h ow ever , h obbled in to cla im seco nd overa ll, The sta rt line for th e race was vie wed with so me apprehe ns io n by riders. Because, before th em laid a gravel downhill , a p proximatel y 300 stee p and 150 feet long , th en flat for another 150 feet before endi ng in a narrow ch u te. All classes sta rt ed to - "gether. a nd Norman (H us), t,?ok th e lead. But, a t th e end of th e first five-milelo n g lap, Norman was m et with a red flag, because th e race had been stopped and th e co u rse re-routed . Man y o f th e riders couldn 't negotiat e a diffi cult hill on th e co u rse, which crested a n impossibl e bottlen eck . After th e necessar y changes had been mad e, o n th e seco nd sta rt, it wa s Norman again o n h is Hu sky, follow ed by Mike Va il (Kaw), Mike Stern (Han), a nd Du ronso (Yam). By th e fourth lap, Duron so was in second, a n d Vail's Kawasaki h ad ' seized o n o ne of th e long logg in g roa ds. H al fwa y into th e race, a bog devel o ped, ca us ing p roblem s for m ost riders. Duronso excel led here, how ever, plowing thro ug h th e bog with little effo rt, p icki ng good lin es. But wa ter and mud found its wa y into th e wheels of Norman 's Husk y Auto . a n d d im ini shing brak es ca used him problem s. Du ronso went o n to tak e th e lead on a long downh ill to fin ish fir st overa ll a nd fir st in th e Over -35 class. Norman was first in th e Over200A cla ss. Mark Ka ru za took th e B class win with a stro ng ride, mak in g 13 la ps. Ron Clizbee made 13 laps a n d fini sh ed seco nd in th e O ver-200A class. Arnet storms Santa Maria MX By Cathy Barbacovi SANTA MA RIA , CA , MAY 5 The CRC traveled a little farther than usual to race at Santa Maria's Spillway Cycle Park, but Ed Arnet definitely mad e th e trip worthwh ile for himself with win s in both th e 250 and 500cc Pro classes. Arn et led from th e sta rt in bo th mot os o f th e 500cc race, but h e wa sn ' t alo ne. J on Ortner a nd Juan Ben a vid ez stayed close throughout th e af ternoon and in th e fir st moto it was Arnet foll ow ed by Ben av id ez with Ortner in third. In th e seco nd m oto, Arnet quickl y grabbed th e lea d wh ile leaving Benavidez and Ortner to do batt le for second. Bo th riders cras hed and a mad dash followed to see who co u ld res ta rt the fast est. Bena videz remounted only to fall again and Ortner finished with the runner- up SP01. Ben avidez wo und up third. Tracy Oswell gave Ar ne t a scar e by winni ng the opening moto in the 250cc cl ass. Arnet finished second and John H emme ended up third. Kenn y Zahrt led the field in th e second rnoto , but Zahrt soo n tir ed giving way to O swell , Joe Hopkins and Arnet, Arnet, how ever , soo n took seco nd afte r ge tt ing by H opkins an d set hi s sig h ts o n O swell. Arnet fin ally got to O swell a nd w ith th e fin al m oto win , in he ri ted the overa ll. O swell 's 1-2 wa s e noug h for seco n d with H emm e taking third. .
