Medi a One brought up eigh t Canad ia n speedwa y racers plus two Seat tle Pro hillclirnbers. in addition to recruiting An chorage's top local raeers. 1t may have been onlv a show. bu t with a 5000 purse up 'for grabs. it was ver y serious fo r th e participants. The real racing was on the oval . but the crowd reallv ca me to see the Widowm aker - a 4'50 pl ywood-andscaffoldi ng ramp with packed din that stretched from the arena floor 10 10 feet short of the ceilin g . It defin itely dominated one's view of the a rena. Challengers had to be mounted on stock bikes and actua lly started on the incli ne . Each rider had two tries, with the top five transferring to the ma in eve nt. Loca l motocrosser Jim McClai n made the h igh mark on his Ka wasa ki 250. besting th e 500cc bikes in th e afternoon sho w, McClain could only manage a fourth la ter in the evening while Keith Steiner , aboard a Yamaha YZ490. mad e it a lmost halfwav 10 take first. People were wondering if a nyone co u ld mak e it o n a stock bike and Tom Schach le found o u t. As eac h p erson h ad h is cha nce a t th e hill th ey rolled up to the bo ttom. Schach le didn ' I ro ll up a n d gu n ned hi s H onda 500 w ith a 50 foot run send ing everyo ne d iving 10 ge t o u t o f hi s way. He mad e it to th e to p a nd th en surp rised everyone by flying off th e top and ridin g down to th e floor. Sch achle was disqualified but th e crowd cheered to see someone fin all y go over the top . Of co urse th e exh ibitio n hill climbers, Gary Kin g a n d Ro n Edie , brought o u t th eir modified bikes a nd easil y mad e it up. The two added so m e sp ice 10 th e climb and drag ra ced eac h o ther to th e top on the na rro w ramp. The ova l was small a nd the dirt soft . but th e speedwa y rid ers still pu t on a n im p ressive exhibi tion. Two Ala sk an speedway rid ers, R o bert H ardy and Andy Thick stun, qua lified for a chance to race with th e British Co lumbian cha m ps.
