Hannah finish ed hi s in credible rid e in fourth , the n came Hi cks. 500cc Honda-mount ed T odd H arrell grabbed the holeshot in th e first500cc moto, just a head of Husqvarna rider Ri ch ard Sands. Half a lap lat er , Honda p ilot Greg Zitt erkopf had th e lead, but crashed a few turns lat er when hi s front wh eel washed out. By th e second la p . G lover had tak en ove r th e lead. followed by Kent Howert on, who was riding a n injured Billy Liles ' factory Kaw asak i. In th ir d wa s H arrell , th en Ba iley, Yam aha rider Scott Mann in g , Mark Murphy a nd Zitterkopf. Two laps lat er . Bailey had m oved past H owerton and sta rted reeling in Glover , wh o had a large 30-second lead. The Honda rider got closer a nd closer to Glover as the rac e wore on. By th e eigh th lap, Glover's lead had dwindled to a little less than two seconds. As th e leaders began moving through traffic, Ba iley pulled alongside Glover and m oved into th e lead. ' After that , the race was all Bail ey's - h e stre tched hi s lead ever y lap until it had grown 10 over a m inute by th e end o f th e moto, Near th e end o f the race, H onda rider j o}o Kell er was making up for a p oor sta rt an d took over third after p assin g H onda 's Mik e Fis her a nd H o wert on . Al th e fin ish , it was Ba iley, G lo ver, Kell er , How ert on , Manni n g a nd Murp hy. Bot h Ba iley a nd Glover had terri ble starts in th e second malo whil e Phil Larson (Ka w) took over th e lead a fte r passi ng Manning. A lap la ter pos itions were Larson, Keller, Man- ning, Ziuerk opf. Howert on , Bailey and G lover. Keller took over th e top SpOI during the third lap , while Bailey and G lover moved up. O n th e fourth lap, Keller had a i .45-second lead over Ba iley; two laps lat er, th e lea d was Ba ilev's. It took G lover six laps 10 get aroimd Kell er. For th e rema inder of th e race it was Bailey (3i .8 seco nds a head of second), G lover, Kell er and H o wert on. Ba iley lapp ed fifth -p la ce r id e r Da vi d McCl ain . 'just tri ed to ride as fast and conservatively as , co u ld , because if yo u sta rt going slo w, yo u sta rt using more en ergy." 125cc H onda ride r J eff Frisz, Kaw asaki mounted Dean Mattson and Suzuki 's Bobby Moore wer e th e first three into turn o ne at the sta rt of th e first 125cc m or o , but two laps later , it wa s Lech ien in th e lead a h ead of Mattson, Kaw a saki ri de r Edd i e Wa rren , Yamaha 's Eddie Hi cks a nd Yama ha 's Keith Bow en ; Kaw asak i's Mark Barnett wa s last. During pract ice. Barnell landed a li ttle short on a jump a nd h yper-extended hi s kn ee and was riding in great pain; he even tu all y pulled out of both m ot os . Barnell'S mechan ic. Ri ck Asch, said he couldn 't believe Barnell even tried 10 ra ce a t a ll . By th e th ird lap - a fter Frisz, Mattson a nd Moore had crashed - Lechi en sta rted pulling aw a y, while Bowen moved into seco n d after p a ssin g Warren , wh o wa s closely follo wed by Keh oe a nd hi s works Suzu ki. Warren held o rr th e cha rge for two laps, th en Keh oe cruised by. After two la ps had passed , Bo wen cras hed a nd d ro pped 10 fourth . Works Su zu ki rid er G eo rge Holla nd was o n th e gas aft er a first turn cra sh - he had contro l o f fifth with five laps 10 go. At th e fini sh , it was Lechi en , Kehoe, Warrt'n , Bowen , H oll and , Bill y Frank, H icks and Mike Beier. David Bailey ge ts a little out of shape wh ile pursuing Broc Glover in the 500cc class. Bai ley won both m ot o s. but Glover st ill leads in points. Kaw asaki rider Rick y R yan blasted into th e lead a t th e sta rt of th e second moro a n d led for a lap a nd a h alf before being pa ssed by Lechien. Fol lowing in third was Honda 's La rry Brooks, th en Frank , Mat son , Hi cks. Fr isz, Keh oe , Guy Cooper (Hon) and Holland. Kehoe was th e one to watch - h e wo rked h is way u p through th e pack a nd u p to th ird aft er passin g Brooks (w ho endoed a lap before) in th e long straigh t. Keh oe th en set o u t a fter Ryan and began reeling him in . Three laps later , Keh oe owned seco nd, th en h e pulled away from Ryan a nd stayed fa ir ly close to Lechien for th e rem a in der o f th e race. H olland was al so o n th e mov e a fter pa ssing Hicks then Brooks wit h six laps to go. Brooks event ua lly fad ed , letting H icks a nd S uzu ki's A .]. Wh iting by. At th e fini sh , it was Lechien , Keh oe, Ryan , Holland, Hicks, Wh itin g , Brook s, Beier a nd Bow en, wh o crash ed twice in th e race. "I didn 't h ave an y p roblem s o u t th ere," said Lechien. " I jus t rode fast a nd tr ied no t 10 fall do wn . It was easy ." ' 'I' m a lill ie out o f shape, " said H oll a nd .
