Green's Jeff Fredette dropped 29 points to beat "Can -Am 's john Martin by three points for the overall win at the Burr Oak National Enduro. The run was o rganized b y the Mid-W est National Enduro Riders. " It's too ea rly in th e season," sai d Cunnin gham, " to worry a bo ut who's leadin g in th e point standings. The m ain th in g is to finish high in th e ea rly runs so yo u don' t have to use up yo ur thro wa way rides," A rid er 's 10 best scores' in the 12ro und series are counted for championshi p points. Da ve Rawlin g, th e o rga ni zi ng club's event coordin ato r, h ad 132.8 gro u nd miles with II ob serv ation checks, 14 timed chec ks, three m ileage resets (for a tota l o f 28. 1 miles), plus two speed cha nges. " It 's difficu lt to tak e poi nts away from th e AA rid ers," said Ra wl in gs, "without losing th e rest of the rid ers. Fre de tte was asked if Ka wa sa ki wa nted h im to make a serio us bid for the Nation al Enduro Champ ionsh ip since h e h as suc h a good start. Persona lly, I want to go for it. " Ma rt in an d Fredett e ea ch h ad dropped 23 points by th e third ga s ( 113 miles ), but Martin co llected a nother nine points to th e six o f Fredet te to fini sh second overall. " You co u ld tell th ey did a lo t of work findin g ar eas to run yo u in and o ut. o f," sai d Martin. " T b ev did a good job; I just wish th ey wouldn 't use th ose black a nd wh ite arrows." Husky-supported GaryJohnston finis hed th ird overa ll wit h a score of 38 an d di d n 't have trouble with the arrows, just with h is timekeeping equipment. " I had a terrib le day," sa id J o h nsto n. " My clock quit and look what happened to this wat ch I borrowed from Dwig ht (R udde r)- I smashed th e crys tal. It still works, but I' m going to rep lace it. It 's just tha t eac h tim e I ask R udder how much h e wants Ior th e wat ch , it goes up SIOO. I qu it as king at 300. "I burned th e seventh check," co ntinued J ohnsto n , " bu t I got through th e foll owi n g section quick enough a nd o n ly lost six . (Kevin) H in es lost eigh t, so I didn 't lose an y time against h is score. I di d ha ve problems toward s the end; I lost a bo lt o ut of my clutch lever , a n d I had a flat tire. By th en , we h ad go ne th rough the las t tim ed chec k a nd a ll that was left wa s an o bserva tion check. I reall y didn ' t care; a li i wanted wa s to get out of th e wood s." Husky's Hines, wh o ti ed J ohnston with 38 points but lost o u t o n th e tiebreaker to fini sh fourth overa ll, had trouble, but not with hi s time keeping equipment. " I go t lost a n d ran one loop twi ce," sa id H in es. " I' m putting in ex tra tim e, but not co l-. lect in g any overtime from Husky wh en I do th at. I didn't h ave a bad ride, but wh at I'm do in g is loo king forward to Morgantown , West Virg in ia, a nd th e Na tiona l Hare Scram bles th ere next week. I rid e en duros mainl y to keep in shape for th e har e scra m bles. " I may go home for a litt le wh ile a fter Morgantown ," contin ued Hines, who lives in Weston, Massachusetts, " I h aven 't been home in over two months. I don't know if I'll go to th e Oregon Na tion al. " " T hey m ade yo u th ink a bo u t wh at yo u were doing toda y," sa id Cunningham. " T hey checked us in and out of long sectio ns and th e chec k p lace me nt wa s good . My bike worked ba sicall y flawlessly a nd I on ly fell down o nce. I felt good a bo u t every th ing. I may ge t beat , but let 's put it th is wa y, I didn 't mak e enough m istak es to ge t beat by much . The sco res will tell. " Wh en th e sco res were ' p o st ed , C unnin gham 's 39 points p laced him fifth overa ll. Husk y's Dave Bert ram, wh o mak es h is home in Ro d eo , Ca li fo rn ia, dropped 50 poi nts to fin ish eight h in th e AA class , and he was no t as happy with his performa nce as Cu n n ingham was with h is. " I don't lik eall the dust," said Bertram . "I think I had o ne of m y worst rides ever. I was passing one of th e slower riders , crash ed o ver th e handl ebars, a nd stuc k th e bar s into my sto mach . I did every th in g wrong." Ra y Mungena st collected th e majoritv of h is 57 poin ts wh en he sto pped in th e first section to aid Ron Ribolzi , wh o had h it a tree an d was knocked unconscious. " Ro n had th e fro nt fender o f hi s Husky wrapped arou nd a tree 'a nd h e was layin g on th e gro u n d, n ot m o ving," sa id Mungen ast. " I jumped o ff m y bike a nd ran ove r to h im; it scared the h ell ou t of m e. H e ca me arou n d in a few minutes a nd started telling me to go ahead, tha t he was alrigh t. I staye d a co u p le of more minutes just to make sure. He's m y frien d an d h e would have done as much for me. I ca rr ied th e lost tim e until th e first .reset. " Randy Kline rode a Yamaha 250 to High Point A honors, droppin g 45 points, th e sa me total as MCC Husky rider Dave Pu ch arich . Klin e won on the tiebr eak er by 92 secon ds. Eri ck Shafer beat o u t J ay H all by six points for seco nd in the 250cc A class beh ind Puch arich, but Erick' s big co n versa tion pi ece will be a bo u t beating hi s father, Don , wh o dr opped 65 po ints for third in th e Sen ior A class. Bill Gusse a n d hi s Bike Barn Can -Am won th e Senior A class wi th a score of 47. J eHSm ith, Ca n-Am's p roduct manager, rides an occasion a l enduro in the Super Senior class a nd a t this event he dropped 87 p oints to win th e class. " I th in k 160 miles wa s too far for m e," sai d Smi th . " I wanted to come back to the pi ts a fter 50 m iles, but th ey kept steering us into th e woods. They didn 't h ave to do tha t; I had already surrendered." Scott Levert on, on a Bike Barn Can-Am, didn 't surre nder, a nd neit her did Gary Wi lliams a nd h is Ft. Dod ge Ka wa sak i ; th ey ea ch drop p ed 78 points to tie for H igh Po int B, with Sco tt wi n ni ng the tie brea ker and in sta nt adva ncement to A class sta tus.
