Zitterkopf got by Mann in g on th e first la p as they qu ickly pulled away from Zah rt wh o had passed Swartz. Ma n n ing reta lia ted o n the fo llo wing la p , a nd Hein rich di splaced Swartz to fifth . Mann in g staye d in fro nt for the next few la ps, but a t th e halfwa y poi n t Zitt erk opf found hi s way back into the lead . H einrich was wa y back in thi rd , but a hea d o f Swartz wh o had Zahrt o n hi s tail. Zitt erk opf's lead on ly lasted a little over a lap before Mann in g stu ffed h im in a turn to ta ke over first. T his would be th e last time th e lead cha nged, for a lt hough Zitterk opf staye d close he co u ld n' t repass Manning before the fini sh.Heinrich main tained th ird ahead o f Swa rtz a nd Zahrt. . . H einrich got off to a rat h er poor start, but was ma king up positions quickly unu l he crashed a t the bottom of th e big downhill tryi ng to pass M ike Baker (MS Raci n g Yam ) for fourt h. O ut fro m , Manning was being ho unded by Ziu erk o p f. and o n lap 10 th e Honda p ilot fina lly found a way into th e lea d. Zitterko pf was a ble to gai n some gro und on th e next go-arou nd as Mannin g got st uck in la p ped tra ffic. But o nce h e go t by th e · lappers, Mannin g d osed th e ga p a nd was kn ock in g a t Ziuerk opf"s d oor as th ey headed into th e fin al lap. The race look ed as if it would go down to th e wi re. but as th ey a p p roached th e fin ish lin e, Zitterkopf go t a break whe n Manning's Yamaha quit a t th e top ofthedownhill. Wit h the exception of the opening day's ra ces in Ma rch, Oswell has wo n virtua lly every race h e has entered at Quail Ca nyon; today he led a ll 48 laps h e wa s racing. In m ot o o ne Chaors got th e lead a n d sem med to stre tch it o u t o ver Flores a nd th e rest o f th e p ack. At th e th ree-quarter mark, Flores closed th e ga p and begun a series o f passing attempts. All fail ed until th e white flag lap wh en Flores passed Cahors in a right-left-right set of turns.
