Minis, Beginners a nd Women C riders on ly rode the first loop. Yama ha rider Kathy Labrum won overa ll oneloop honors , all decked o ut in pink lea th ers. (H usband J a ck had a good day also, winning the B Vet class, pushing his Yamaha to an exce llent sco re of just five poi nts lost for two loops .) Lori Borrree (Ya m ) took second overall , first Mini . The second loop started in the sa me place as th e first loop a n d us ed th e same trai l for two miles , where it th en spl it off into the before-m en tioned m oon rock area. From there the co u rse wander ed through th e Spangler Hills before heading across th e bi g valley towa rds th e Summit Hills. Th e speed average was a modest 24 mph and it loo ked like flat, boring terrain all the wa y across the valley. Natura ll y, bored riders figured th ey cou ldn ' t h ide a ch eck h ere so th ey tend ed to ride ah ead of schedule a bit. . Mistak e. All of a sudden the ground dro p ped aw ay into a n unseen gully wh ere a sne ak y check awaited the unsuspecting riders. The checkers co u nte d 45 riders wh o burned (arrived ea rlier ) th e check. Many wh o man aged to scru b off eno ugh speed to zero th e chec k still lost a lot of seco nd s as, naturall y, it was a tiebreaker. More than on e rider slid into th e chec k uttering somewhat foul language as they kn ew they had been had. It was on e of the better ch eck placem ents seen in a long time. The winnerof the200 A class rea lly ea rne d hi s win. Donnie Simone crashed his KDX200 Kawasaki while playrid in g Sa tur da y, hard enough to ha ve to be pi cked up by IRRC. Simone's brand new Mota 4 h elmet ca rr ied tire tracks from the crash . Then, just 10 . miles into th e enduro, h is bike's odometer broke and he was riding J b lind (so tospeak jran odometer-is an enduro rider's com pass. Wi thout it a ri der has no way of kn owing what mi leage h e is on. Si mone ended up losing eight points to edge Garner Pa len ske (Ka w), wh o also dro p ped eight; Simone had a comfortab le 94second edge over Pa lenske. The B Women were led by Candy Hand (Yam) over frie nd and rival Dana Bell (Ya m! Answer Product! Dura lu be), dro p p ing I I and 13 points respectively.
