Bob Shillinger leaves a pit stop while Geoff Ballard (right). sidelined by mononucleosis - watches. Shillinger finished fourth overall. Hines had clear sailing after Ed ' Lojak broke while leading. A.NA. National Champion- H awkins was still only 37 seconds behind Hines, but the talented 18year-old couldn't maintain the blistering pace. " I was trying to keep up with them, ride with them," he said, " but on the second lap I slid down' an d hit a tree on one of those downhills and crashed a lillie bit-not bad. I kept going, and then I started slowing because I didn 't have anybody to ride with. Then I saw Johnny (Martin) coming, and I thought he was riding faster than I was , so I just let him by and rode behind him until the last lap, and then I got a break." Martin moved from ninth to fourth overall on lap three and kept on charging. He sa id, "I had a halfway decent sta rt, and then I went down in the ruts as soon as we got in the woods. Other than that, I tried to plug along. It was so slippery because o£ the three-wheelers (The Saturday race ran most o£ the same track.)they packed it down and it was really fast stu ff today, it seemed, and then when you got in the woods you couldn 't pass there either because of the darned ruts which started to develop. After I passed Hawkins (in the next 10 last lap), I had to try to hold him off, and I made it about a fourth of the way around before I clobbered . a tree. I didn't get hurt much. I just saw a few stars, so th en it was , 'I'd better try to hang on to third." Wh en "Anxious Bob" Shillinger finish ed fourth overall and second in Open A, he said it was a great way 10 cel ebrate his 26th birthday. Asked the secret of his success, he said, "My shock didn't break. and I didn't get my flat until the last lap. Everything worked good on the bike, I got a good start, around eighth or ninth into the woods, and I just held a steady pace all da y long." . At the end of lap three, Hines roared onto the str aightaway approaching the scoring barrels just a hea d of Lojak, but Lojak muscled past him in front of the pit area, nearly locking handl ebars in the process. Later Hines asked his teammate, " Wh a t broke your front number panel?" Loj ak answered, " Yo u did. You got me with a rock there, and on e her e (gestu ring at h is upper chest). That's when I got mad down in that corner and came by you. " H ines laughed. " T h a t' s why I ride an Open class bike. " Both riders' made th eir final pit stop after the fourth lap, but this time Lojak was 37 seconds ahead of Hines through the barrels. Later Hines said, " T he breather hose for my gas got . , ship Rare Scrambles Series: Round S_ Hines hauls at La .Lynn's DudeRanch By Suzi Henry H URRICANE MILLS, TN , APR. 28 Husqvarna teammates Kevin Hines and Randy Hawkins daimed the overall and runner-up slots at the Tennessee round of the National Hare Scrambles Series. It was th e first high point o£ th e 1985season for Hines, who receives support from Husqvarna, Malcolm Smith, Bel-Ray, Off-Road, HRP, Autolite, Smith and Metzeler. ' Clear skies and mid-70s temperatures welcomed the nearly 200 entrants 10 Loretta Lynn 's Dude Ranch , and the race got under way at high noon. . There was no parade lap around the hill y, technicall y demanding 12-plus .. mil e track because, as promoter Dave Coombs put it, "It would take the rest o£ th e da y. 10 get 'em all back in aga in ." H e sta rt ed the riders in three waves , with five o£ th e seven National points-paying classes on the first line, The Four-Stroke, Super Senior and Senior B cla sses roared off a minute lat er, foll ow ed by th e remaining B riders. . Husky's Mark H yde got a nother of his patented holeshots on his new 400WRX, but a pileup put Honda test rid er Drew Smith a nd defending Seni or champ Barry Higgins on the grou nd. Unfazed, they both p roceeded to work their way ba ck through th e 24 pack. Smith finished sixth overall and fourth in Open A on a CR500, whil e Higgins and his 350cc H&H KTM won the Senior A class a n d finished 13th overall . The first lap proved dis astrous for Team Husky's Fritz Kadlec, wh o said, "I was third off the start and really feeling good, but then a bo u t five miles out I broke the (rear brake) .. bac~!ng plate, and that was it for th e day. . . Hyde's luck wasn't much better, Still unfamiliar with h is new bike, he took a spill in the first lap, bending his pipe and losing five positions. " I got going again, " he sa id , "and then I got a flat." With no spare wh eel, he lost valuable time making what he called " a lmost a Six Day change-it almost took me six days 10 change it. " H e co m p leted all six laps but finish ed nearly a lap behind H in es. At th e end o £lap one Ed Lojak, the 1982-83 National Hare Scrambl es Champion , clocked through the barrels o ne second ahead of Hines. Hawkins was a scant 10 seconds back, with Hyde, Stan Lojak and eight others checking in within th e next minute and a half. Most o£ the riders pitted after the second lap, an d this time Hines went through nine seconds a hea d of Loj ak . cr im ped in half and the bike started seizing. Then I looked down and pulled th e thing off , and gas started sq u irt ing up in my eyeballs." H awkins was nearl y three minutes beh ind Hines, followed within th e next minute by Martin and Shillinger. But Lojak 's lu ck ran ou t on lap five when · h is radiator hose broke, putting him out o£ the race. " It got pushed off by a stick or something," he said. "A lot o£ people stopped 10 help me, but I needed a new bike. " Hines maintained his same steady pace, averaging under 34 minutes a lap all aft ernoon. Martin was nearly three minutes back, with Hawkins right on his rear wheel. From there it was clear. sail ing to the finish line for Hines. He finished his sixth and final lap one minute 31 seconds ahead of Hawkins, who had lit the afterburners 10 repass Martin and hold him off. In winner's circle a happy Hines said, "I really enjoyed it . Dave Coombs does a good job of putting on all the events." Team Honda's Bruce Ogilvie won 'the Four-Stroke class on a 1984XR500, catching Mike Treadway on the last lap. Cali£ornian Ogilvie, a two-time ISDE rider, said, "These guys back here are good, no doubt about it. They 've got all the advantages, though. If they were riding out west , it might be a different story. I've had experience in riding in the woods. It just took me a while to relearn it." Honda 's 1984 Baja 1000 winners, Randy Morales and Chuck Miller, met with less satisfactory results. Morales dropped out after jamming a stick into his hand, between his index and middle ringers , wh ile Miller turned in top 10 lap times in all but lap three, which he missed entirely. "I ran out of gas ," he said sheepishly, "and they had to' bring some out to me. A rider has no conscience, you know that. I can do it, I know I canl I. .. can 't ... make...it... " Can-Am product manager and defend ing Super 'Senior cham p Jeff Smith won his class with a six lap ride, after Larry Hayes DNF several miles from the finish.
