The trails were exce llent and well la id o u t. I had so me p roblems ge tt ing aro u n d slower ride rs , but th at wa s minor. Gary johnston, th e eig h th overall fini sh er a nd o ne of five AA Husky riders who dropped eig h t points, in cl ud in g Randy Hawkins, j eff Russell a nd M ike Toole, agreed with Martin on th e importance of th e la st sec tio n. "We had almost 100 miles o f gassing it ," sa id johnston, " a nd then th ey tossed in that last gnarly , tight a nd long section. It would have separat ed the men from th e boys . It would ha ve separated all those four-point scores," Hawkins got th e nod to ea rn seventh o vera ll. johnston continued his argu men t with Barry Bell , th e secon d place fin ish er in th e Open A class with 17 points, on th e merits of ca rrying extra timek eeping eq u ip me nt. " My co m p u ter quit and th en my clock wa s off," said johnston, "and that co st me two points. " " Why don 't you ch eck yo ur watch?" a sked Bell. "I don't wear a wat ch, " sa id johnsto n. "I don' t thi n k I should have to ca rry three time machines," Alan Randt and Dwight Rudder eac h dropped 10 points with Randt getting the nod a t th e tiebreaker for II th in the AA ranks. Dwight had problems when h e banged into a tree and lost th e radiator off hi s KTM 250 ea rly in th e run . H e was a ble to byp ass th e radiat or a nd co m p lete th e run without losing too much time.
