MAY 12 Warren Reid, riding a White Brothers-equipped Yamaha TT600, claimed a I-I score for the Open Pro class win at the Continental Motosport Club's Yokohama Tire/Pro-Tee Four-Strok e Ch ampionships a t Carlsbad Raceway. Don Turk (Hon) wa s th e 500cc P ro w inner , beating out former National Motocross Champ ion G ar y J ones (H us ). But two turns lat er, Reid missed a sh ift a nd was rammed by Fi sh er, wh o resumed th e lead. On th e next lap, h ow ever , Fish er began to slo w; in a tu rn Reid pointed 10 Fisher's rear brak e, indicati ng tha t the brak e ancho r rod had been brok en . Reid took the lead back a nd wa s never serious ly challe nged for th e rest of th e moto, Fis her relied o n engi ne co m p ressio n to m ake u p for the la ck o f rear brake and rolled in Cor seco nd. Ort ner was th ird. Mo ta two saw Fish er and Reid aga in dici ng it out for th e lead . Fish er o nce agai n took the lead a t th e first tu rn, but Reid soon passed h im. But th en Reid o nce more missed a sh ift goi ng into a turn . a n d Fish er passed hi m bac k. A lap lat er, Reid retal ia ted as th ey went u p a hill , ge tti ng enough o Ca drive 10 m ake a p ass for th e lead that fin all y stuck. Fo r th e next three or four laps, Reid turned o n the gas to build up h is lead. th en rel ax ed a n d wa ited for th e finis h. But th e drama wasn 't over. Fish er began 10 m ak e a charge and soon ca ugh t up with Reid. The next co upl e of laps saw Fi sh er and Reid riding nose- to -tail before Reid was able to str etch out his lead again. Reid 's seco nd moto win ga ve him th e overa ll ; Fi sh er wa s only a few seco nds back in seco nd; Ortner was a distant : third. . " O n th e n ex t lap I wa s passing h im and showed him th at hi s brak e arm was broken. so I built up qu ite a good lead. I sto p ped for a coup le of m inutes to tell Horst Leitner th at hi s daugh ter had fallen down. ' an d that was a bo u t it. When I pa ssed Mike in th e seco nd moto , I made th e mistak e of backing off too much , and he sta rted clos ing up , so I had 10 get back on th e gas." 500cc Pro Kei th O 'Neal rode smart 10 claim firs t 500cc Pro in the fir st round (the 500cc Pro class was co m bined with ) th e 0 pen P ro s), a h ea d 0 f Jones a nd Turk. The second mota was a tight duel between Turk and Jones. with k ldi h d h Turk h a mg t ea vantage over t e form er cham p. In the fin al laps, jones m ade repeated ch arges to p ass Turk, but without success. The last few turns up to th e fini sh line saw Jones onl y a few feet behind the lead er; co m in gofCDevil's Drop. Jones k rna d e one I ast c ha rge, but T urx beat h im 10 the fin ish. Turk 's 3- 1 ride wa s good enough C the overa I\, J ones or was seco nd, and Wiggins earned third with a 4-3 score. Round two sa w th e Whitnevs blast into th e lead . closely p urs ued by th e Palfreym ans. Wi th in a cou p le of laps, both teams were going for it wheelto -wheel, and th e Palfreym ans eventu all y emerged on top. Further back was a battle for third , betwee n Mal erl H arr is, Ralph Wh itney/Paul Stirn so n (EML) , an d Bob Sch noor/ Randy La ngosh (EML). Mal er/Harri s sta lled o ut o f th e ba tt le, levin g th e fight to Whitney/Stim son and Sch noor/ La ngosh . With in a few laps, Schnoor/ Langosh was a ble 10 get a dr ive goi ng, a nd p assed th eir rival team 10 n ail do wn third for th e day. Women Mercedes Gonzales (Kaw) domina ted th e Women 's Two-Strok e class co m p letely both times o u t. Moto one saw Karen Leitinger (Han ) briefly ta ke th e lead before Gonzales made her m ov e. The rnoto ended with Gonzales fini shing over 90 seconds a head of Leitinger. Third was Stephanie Jones (Yam) . Moto two was a replay, with Leitinger taking th e start. but Gonzales winning th e war. After passing Leitinger, Gonzales mainta ined a very fast. co ns istent pace in which sh e eventually lapped almost th e ent ire field .
