Mike Moore took th e 250cc LT heat ra ce ahead of Kregg Bentley a nd Eddie Kauffman . Bentley was fir st into th e corner in th e ma in, followed by Moore, Ed Meyer a n d Kauffman , but Moore took over th e lead out of th e turn. After a bad start, Bo bby Shaw passed james H arris o ver a jump a n d Meyer in a hairpin turn co m ing o u t of th e infield on th e fir st lap . Bentl ey went inside in tu rn four to finish la p o ne in th e lead , but lost it aga in to Moore on th e back stra ig ht. Thomas' 4-2 rid es were good for seco nd overa ll , while Stine's 3-3 effort s edged Brown 's 2-4 scores for third ove rall. Shumat e remo u nted behind th e pack, but Sanford 's day had ended. Meanwhi le, Forkn er went down, and Newman and Ca stor fought for th e lead. Ca stor gra bbed th e lead over th e doubles, but N ewman quickl y put his KX out front and began to pu ll a way. H e finished 10 seconds ahead of Castor, wh o had four secon ds on Forkner. Shumate finished seven th . N ewman claimed th e secon d-m o ro hol eshot a h ead of Fork ner and Castor. The Suzu ki pilot went down on th e first lap, and Ca stor a rternp ted to reel in Newman , wh o had stretched his lea d by three seco n ds.
