Larry Benedict (667) and Terry Szucsko (97A) went for it in the 125cc and 250cc Intermediates at DeAnza. Benedict won the 250s. Streng strikes DeAnza Novices By Nate Rauba SUNNYMEAD. CA, APR. 21 A pair of seconds netted Pa t Streng (Yarn) th e overall victory in th e 125cc Beginner class at today's DeAnza Racing Club 28 MX. Whi le Stre ng rode consis tent ly to second in bot h mo tos, the winn ers of each heat co uld n' t put two stro ng rides togeth er. Streng gra bbed th e lead at th e sta n o f th e first moto a hea d of T on y Camarena (Han), Kevin T ho rn (Hon), and T racy La ye (Kaw), Laye sta lled in a tight hairpin , causing a ma ssive pileup, giving Streng, Camarena, and Thorn a big lead . Streng was bein g pressu red by Ca ma rena, while Thorn began to d rop back. Cam ar ena go t by Streng o n the th ird lap, and Ruben Gr ijal va (Yam) came up to pressu re T ho rn for th ird. For th e rema inder of th e race Stren g never let Ca marena o ut of his sigh t, but he couldn't get close enough to th e H on da p ilot to make a bid for th e lead . Thorn held o rr th e attacks of R ichard Gerag ht y (Yam) and J ess Carmona (Hon) to ta ke thi rd . Stre ng aga in led the sta n of mot a two with Geraghty and La ye following. Laye passed them both on the first lap and q u ick ly mo ved away, whi le Streng pu t some distance o n Gera gh ty. Cama rena moved up to th ird o n th e seco nd lap . bu t a lap lat er fell back to sixth. From then o n th e order was set, as La ye rode o n to take th e win with Stren g second, a hea d of Geraghty, Ruben Grij alva (Ya m), Carmona, a nd Camaren a. Stren g was th e overall winner, and Geraghty nailed th e runnerup po sition over Camaren a. Cagiva 's Ron Turner took wins in th e 125cc and Open Pro classes. On his WMX500. Turner easily put away hi s onl y o the r competitor. Tom Combs (Kaw), in both rnotos, Winnin ~ th e I25cc class was a little more diffi cult for Turner . Chris H einrich (Kaw) led about half of the first moto as Turner stayed right on his tail, with J eff Matiasevich in ' Turner 's tracks. Turne r go t th e lead when Heinrich went o ff th e track, but was pa ssed by Mati asevich a short time lat er. Matiasevich led th e rest of th e race up to th e last tum wh en T urner dove to the insi de and got by for th e win . T urne r went to th e in side o f Mat iasevic h agai n in the second mot a , th is time in th e second turn on the first lap. T urne r qu ickl y p ulled away a nd was never cha lle nged, as H einrich held second a com fortable distan ce clear of Mat iasevich for most of th e race. Results PEE WEE 1: 1. Keller, Rotherham claim Clarks Branch MX wins By Clay Light ROSEBURG, OR, APR. 14 Roseburg Honda' s Rodney Keller continued his reign over Clarks Branch Raceway. once again topping the 250cc Pro class on his Honda CR250R after demolishing both rnotos, Southern Oregon speedster Dennis Rotherham rod e hi s H onda to a win in th e 250cc B class, using a 1-2 tall y to nab first p lace brass. Action in th e 125cc B class was sp li t into two divisions due to th e num ber of riders. T he first div ision ope ni ng m ota sa w Je rry Aiche r (Yama ha Spor t Center) motor to th e checkered flag for a to tal rou t of th e class, p ursued by Brian Summer lin (Ka w) and Ra y Burlin gton (Kaw). The seco nd mo to o nce agai n saw a Summer lin/ Aicher swaplest from th e drop of the ga te to th e finish. Summerlin took charge lat e in th e mota fo r the overa ll win with a 2-1 tall y, bea ting Aicher (1-2) and Burling ton (3-4). Division two' s first mota saw Honda rid er Mark H amaker j ump into th e lead , followed by Darrell Woulbrandt (Kaw) a nd Darren Cla yton (H a n). Hamaker held orr the adv ance s of Cla yton to take the win , but in th e second ou ting it was Clayton getting the edge necessary to grab th e win on his Honda . Hamaker took a seco nd ahead of Woulbrandt and Lan ce Holder (Suz), Pro racing stirred up lots of excitement as Keller go t hol eshot honors a head of rival John Woodley (Hon) a n d Curti s Rough (Ya m). Chad. Klin gb eil (H a n) pushed himself into con ten tio n in th e combined 250/125 Pro class, moving up to fourth. Behind Kell er and the rest of the pack, 125cc riders Ricky Gunderson (Yamaha of Springfield ) and T roy Co burg (Han) dueled in the dust. but neither of th em could keep up th e pace. Woodley rod e on th e gas behind Kell er throughout both motos a nd earn ed second place mon ey. Klingbeil took a 4-3 for third overall. Coons, Lindsay hot at PIR By John Arthur Burrus PHOENIX, AZ, APR. 12 David Coons thrash ed his East Side Performance-sponsored llOOcc Suzuki Katana to decisive Formula I and Super Street C and D racing and established a comfortable lead by th e third of 15 laps. Wh ile Williams cru ised. Scott Willock, on a Performance Consulta nt s RZ350, tried to hold off LindSay. T rad in g second and third overall spots five tim es, Lindsay finally prevailed by half-a-bik elength. Joe Shelton was right behi nd on a Kin gm an Cycle Works/HPS Oi ls FJ600 for second in Stock Production. "Storm in ' Nor man" Ben edum rod e th e Rising Sun Cycle/Quadrifogl io GS450 Su zu ki to fifth overall and th ird in Stock Production D. For Super Street C raci ng, Williams borrowed Bennett Dorrance's 550 Su zuk i a nd almost managed a no ther first overall. Early laps belonged to Chuck Crawford o n a Performance Consultants/Benn is Racing Yam aha Seca 550. But as th e competition got going between Willi am s and RZ500mounted Wayne Martella. and between Super Street D riders Willock and Lindsay, Crawford was wedged int o th e number five spo t. Williams was ahead on th e white flag lap , but Martell a was th ere firs t for the checkers. Lindsay was next for the Super Street D trophy, followed by Willock. then Crawford, th en Norm Benedum o n a Suzuki GS450 for third Super Street D. Coons cam e out to race th e big guys in the Super Street A and B event and managed to keep th e front wheel of his Katana fairly well stuck to the tarmac, at least on th e strai gh taways. Overtaking Kaw asaki 900 Ninjamounted Gr eg Wing (Mo to rcycle &: Marine/Wing Ra cing) just past midrace, Coons' enth usiastic riding style earned him the Super Street A trophy by several seconds. Wing was second. an d Jeff Anderson rod e Kevin Elliott's Kawasaki 750 Turbo to third. Then cam e Tom Moore on a 1000 Du cati for th e Super Street B win . Pilot ing Richard Kahn 's 900 Ninja. Will iams got a lat e sta rt for the Formula event I but thread ed his way th rough all th e tra ffic excep t one scoo ter for seco nd pl ace.
