T h e 1985 Flying W' s Spring Series is hav in g problem s getti ng underway. T he first ra ce was sched u led for February 24 but it had to be p ost poned until Apri l 28th becau se h alf th e track was still under snow, So th e sched u led seco nd ra ce became th e ac tua l first race. For this one, so me how th e word got a round tha t th e snow was still in Winnemucca so the turnout wa s very light. Only 50 riders sig ned up . T hat's too bad because th e sn ow was pretty much gone, th e wea th er wa s Iine tex -" cept for a little sp r in kli ng lat e in th e day ), an d th e tra ck lay out wa s o ne of the best ever done by th e Flying W' s. One top District 36 Pro,J df " Crazy" Cl outier (Kaw) did show up. However, he jumped th e starting gate in h is first mota a nd wa s pen alized a -lap . That made Cl outier really cra zy so h e decided to ride hi s seco n d mota. That seem ed to be not a wi se de cisi on since, even with hi s o ne -la p pen alty, Cloutier had officially finished fourth , So, if h e h ad won th e second m oto, h is overall score probably would have been high enou gh to ea rn a dollar or two and a District point or two . Anywa y, th e rest o f th e Experts put o n a good race. In th e first moto, Schaacht and Brown (in Dazzling pink lea th ers) ch ased Ma ga to th e checkered in that order, In th eir second mota, Schaacht got the holeshot but Maga a n d Brown got around when h e mired himself in a dusty corner. The two leaders then engaged in a good el bow-to-el bo w battle. It was hard , clean dueling while trading th e lead back and forth , Finally Brown tired and Maga had the la st couple of laps to himself. After Cloutier's penalty wa s co u nted, fina l scores were Maga I-I, Brown 3-2, a nd Schaacht 2-3. There was a lso close ra cing to be seen in th e Vets race H awthorne's Russ Wyant a nd Elko's J eff Carson fou ght eac h a ll th e wa y, Wyant won both mot os. Among th e l25 cc No vices, Brian Eld er (Kaw) ro de a mi ghty good race as he m opped tip th e class in both motos.
