Millspaugh had pulled o u t a few seco nds on th e war for third. but after getting by Sampso n. Maddux quickl y reduced th e m ar gin and was ch allenging Millspaugh a s th ey h eaded into the final lap. Try as he might. Maddux cou ldn't get by a n d ca me up a couple of bikelen g th s sh ort a t th e finis h. CA, FEB . 23 A name out of th e past ca me back to Corona Saturday night and brought a w ife and so me wi nning wa ys with him. Joh n Todd able on ly to follow behind for 15 laps. Todd is from Arizona. and had to have hi s mind el sewhere a s his wif e is expectin g their first ch ild a n ytime. Cannon had th e Sh ell Yamaha working just fin e on th e half mil e a s he was in total charge fiom th e drop o f th e flag. Dann y Perkins gav e him th e biggest ch allenge - Perkins had th e pow er . but co u ldn' t get on track through th e co mers a nd it cos t h im . Thompson was just th e o p posite he was powered a n d had to fight every in ch o f th e way to keep th e o thers in sigh t. H ames had his troubles in th e h eat a nd didn ' t even mak e th e mam. The Dodge Racing T eam/Pape Raci n g T eam riv alry in th e Open Novi ce half mile is turning in to its own divi sion. with the Dodge's fielding four riders and Pape having three. Onl y Ro n Cochard was unattached. It wa s Chris Dodge who got the nod off th e line followed by J oe Pape a nd Eddi e Dodge. Eddie took over th e lead on the second lap as Chris sta rted hav ing problems. Pape d rpped 10 fourth . but wo rk ed his way back up to second with five laps to go. Cochard a n d his Yamaha locked into th e third sp o t and weren't moving for a nyo ne. At th e n ag. it was Edd ie Dodge. P ape a nd Cocha rd . Some of the mos t impressive riding came in the l25cc Intermediate class. as Mark G er loff (Ga lveston Honda /O 'Neal ) grabbed th e holeshot, followed by Chesser (Galveston Honda /Tearn Tamm ) a nd David C lark (Galveston Honda)a very tight second a n d third. The three lead ers were so tight during th e fir st lap that yo u could throw a blanket over all of them. Chesser was breathing on Gerloff's rear fend er . and squared off every turn trying to get around his teammate. Then Jason Melancon got on th e gas. a nd used some unusual lin es to make it a four-wa y battle. O n a hard off-camber left-hander with deep ruts. Melancon hit the extreme inside lip a nd table-topped- the sec.tio n to gain time. Melancon passed Clark to claim th ird . and Chesser found his way around Gerloff. cutting some o f th e fa stest lap tim es of the day . O n the fourth la p Me lancon dropped out with mechanical problems. putting Clark ba ck into th ird . O n the next lap Chesser went wide on a tight right-hander. going off the co u rse and al lowing Gerloff to move into first . Chesser quickl y made up the los t time and sq ueezed ba ck into the lead just before th e finish . Gerloff finished in second. and Clark wasn't far beh ind in third. The seco nd mota started with Chesser aga in leading the wa y. followed by Gerloff. Cl ark . Todd Currie a nd Derrick Staff ord. Chesser stretched hi s lead to a bo u t five seconds during the first few laps. a n d co nt in ued to pull to a IO-second lead a t th e fin ish. Hughes pulled a slim lead in th e first lap. only to lo se it to Gibson. Th e pair pulled from th e rest of th e field, a nd Gibson in creased his lead to a bo u t 10 seco nds over seco n dp lace Hughes. At th e finish, a close battle for third em erged between John Morell (S uz) an d Kevin Branch (Suz), with Morell besting Branch to take th e slo t. For th e seco nd mot o, Gibson jetted o ut o f th e ga te firs t, with Hughes mak in g h is way th rough traffi c into th e seco n d spot. Hughes sta yed close during th e openi ng laps, but G ibson grad uall y pulled away , taking th e victory and th e ove ra ll with a co m fortable 15-second marg in . I n th e first 250cc Expert moto Rusty Dovell (Conroe Suzuki ) m assively holeshot th e pack into th e first turn. Kenny Brown foll owed in secon d, until h e crashed. trapping Brett Hermann (Cycl e Shack North ) behind h im . H ermann fin all y got arou nd the fallen Honda rider. and up front Do vel ] was looking fast and secure in firs t. with Stuart McAvo y (Kaw) second and David Good (Conroe Suzuki) third . Then Dov ell cra shed. McAvoy took th e lead and Good moved into second. Hermann had moved up into th ird pla ce. and stayed on the th rottle to pass Good. Hermann th en made his way a ro un d McAvo y on th e startfin ish stra ig h t. a nd cruised to a con vin cing win. McAvoy ran behind Hermann to fini sh secon d. and Brown final ly pa ssed G ood to fini sh th ird. Brown gat ed perfectl y-at th e start of th e seco nd moto, with H ermann. ·McAvoy.
