Zuki T YLE R, T X, JAN . 13 Alan King squeaked by a di sappointed Danny Storbeck late in the second moto to take the overall in the 250cc Pro class at 38 - the Team Tam m first-annual For ce of th e Eighties Texas Cl assic, held a t th e Swan MX R a cew a y. T e am Tam m's Mik e Beier found th e 125cc Pros to be easy pick in s as he led a ll but three laps en route to a perfect score. In the first 250cc Pro Mot o Storbeck held the lead from the gate to the tape. Dennis H aw thorne ran seco n d, and held o ff King ten of th e twelve laps wh ile Sto rbeck sizzled o u t of sigh t. Kirk Spencer ran third a t the start with All ey Semar, Bo Stega ll , an d Kin g th e second tr io. Stegall cra shed a nd was go ne o n lap two , a llowing J eff Arnold to move into sixth place . Kin g was cl imbing a lo ng with Chad Parker a t the mot a 's midw ay point. Sto rbeck ra n wire to wire for the easy victory. Kin g was second ahea d o f H aw thorne, S penc er, Sema r, a n d Park er. The next la p saw Storbeck st ill sa iling in the lead, with Kin g second ah ead o f Hawth orn e, Fellars in fourth , Sema r fifth . On lap five Parker unsea ted Sernar for fifth , a nd Storbeck, work in g lap six with a secu re lead , wen t for th e double jump up on th e hill a nd ca me u p short . Park er pa ssed Fell ars for th ird in mo to and on the day. After Fell ars (eleventh overa ll) Sernar sac ked fifth aga in 10 fini sh fourth . In th e fir st l25cc Pro moto, Billy Wh itl ey took th e early lea d with Beier, Dennis Daf t, Storbeck, H awthorne, and Park er trail in g. Ted H oyt, Gordon Ward , and R ick Ma ki wer e th e wi n ne rs of the pro classes, a nd a ll th ree moved o ut to big leads dur ing the 45-m in ute race. H oyt (H T Ra cing/Ho n ) sta rted a t th e fro nt of the Open P ro division and never left th e positio n. Ya mahamounted Tim Ca uby a nd Brent \Val lingsford (H us) ga ve chase, bu t by the en d of th e firs t lap Hoyt had a lready esta blished a bout a l O-sccond lead. Gary Jones (MXA/ H us) ca me u p to p ressure Wa ll ingsford on la p I W O a nd passed h im , then set hi s sig h ts o n Cauby. A littl e whi le later Jones had second, bu t H oyt was gone wi th the wi n. J o nes p laced seco n d a few clicks a head o f Ca uby , C hris Craft (SD/ Mid Ci ties Honda ) made a la st-l a p cha rge to try a nd ta ke fourt h fro m Wall in gsford , but came u p a few bikelengths sho rt. Brad McLeod (Mud Sha rks / Hon) holeshot th e 250cc lin e, with Sea n Corcoran (Suz Cou ntry) a nd Ward (MS Racin g/ Yam ) followi ng. Corcora n cra shed in the th ird turn , a nd it was n ' t long before Ward worked hi s way to th e lead. Su n west Yamaha 's Mark Decker moved to third o n th e first lap , an d th e race sett led into a pred ictable pattern. With two laps to go Ward pa ssed Open winner Hoyt and wa s th e fir st P ro a cro ss th e finish line. McL eod was seco nd, a nd Chris Fl eming (Mo m / Han ) go t by Decker o n th e last lap to cla im third. After hi s win, Ward rushed out to Riverside Raceway and won an o ther grand p rix event. Kaw asaki 's Todd Campbell was th e favorite 10 win th e 125cc cla ss, and he quickl y moved into th e lead a t the sta rt with Maki (Cycl World/ Hon) in h ot pursui t. Ca m p bell's Kawasa ki seized on th e first lap, g iving the lead to Maki .Ty Dav is (PJ IIHon) took over second ahead o fJ ay Stranger (Yam) . Maki quickly began to pull away from Davi s, and J oel Wheeler (Han) ca me up to chall enge Stra nger for th ird. " I tried to bu ild as big a lead as I co uld," sai d Maki, " beca use I kn ew that I was going to be sto p p in g on th e last lap for gas." Maki had learn ed th e hard way; he lost th e last gra n d p ri x, running out o f gas n ear th e fin ish and pushing hi s bike for second-p lace. Maki's stra tegy worked; he wa s a ble to mak e th e gas sto p and still win by a large marg in. Davis pl aced secon d , a nd Wh eeler got by . Stranger to clai m third.
