Barring a n eleven th- ho ur save, the Dunes a re no w closed; havin g fall en vict im to ins ura nce p rob lems. A la rg e crowd was o n hand for the sad occasion , including news tea ms fro m ABC and NBC television network a ffiIia res. "hen racing got u nd erway in the 125cc Intermedi at es, Bria n Peo pl es wa s fa st est o ff th e lin e a n d led a t the end of lap one, with Ray Groom right behind. Groom ran o ff the track in th e next lap, a nd J eff Capt moved in to striki ng d istance with a close seco nd . Capt took th e lead on la p three and Cu rt Trimble a lso squeezed by Peop les. Trimble pu t some heavy pressure o n Capt and th e finish was so clos e that o n ly the f1agger co u ld make th e call, giving the nod to Ca PI. As moto two of the I25cc Int ermedia tes bega n, Trimble took a n im me di a te lead . A tired Ca p t was right behind bu t co u ld no t ge t by. With a second and first. T ri m ble took first overall with Ca p t secon d. Larr y Brook s flash ed to th e front of th e 125cc Pro s, bla stin g th rough th e de p sandwas h rig h t a fter th e sta rt. He e held th e lead , and hi s H onda steadily pulled awa y 10 win by a huge marg in. Th e real fight developed for second. Ri ck Mak i, riding a Cycle World Suzuki, a nd Brent Shury, on a Honda for FM F and Bell St. Honda, were a t eac h o the r's throats for th e first two laps.
