In th e seco nd moto Vance edged o ut Bak er , Myers and Cook for th e hol eshot, Bak er a p p lied intense p ressure, but Vance th warted every mov e fo r a lap . The two went over th e big jum p side-by-side a nd sideways - yet someh ow didn't co lli de. Bak er sh u t th e ga te in th e next turn , but Vance regained th e lead a few turns la ter. Ba ker took the lead for good in a rig ht right- hand tu m, while Thomas, Cook a nd Ha m mer fought o ver th ird. The ba ttle raged until th e checkered with Ba ker holdin g off Vance for th e o vera ll, a nd Thomas held off Hammer for th ird a nd third overall. Whisperin' Smith, who was rid ing wi th a bad ly-warped rea r rim on hi s YZ. grabbed th e ho lesh ot in the first 250cc Expert moto over Ba ker a nd Theiss. Bak er la tch ed o nto Smi th , th en for ced him into an error on th e seco nd la p . Smi th went down , a llowin g Theiss to slip by Ba ker. Whi le Ba ker pressu red T heiss for the lead , Smi th rem ounted a nd set after th e lea ders. H e pa ssed Bill Fullerton (Kaw) then reeled in and passed Baker for seco n d la te in the mot a . Theiss held on for the win over Smith a nd Ba ker. In the seco nd ma la , Smith agai n co llected the hol esho t ahead o fTheiss a nd Bak er. While Smi th stead ily bu ilt a cushion. Baker a nd Theiss fough t over seco nd. T heiss yielded to Bak er 's ho un ding o n th e seco nd lap, o n ly to retal ia te a lap la ter. H e managed to pu t a seco nd on Bak er, but a la p la ter Bak er was upon him aga in . The two swapped positions several times late in th e moto: Ba ker finall y loo k th e adv antage o n th e last lap an d held it. Smith took th e win for th e overa ll wit h Theiss' I-3 tall y edging Ba ker's 3-2 score for seco nd o vera ll. O rego n. McC oy bested a n u m ber o f Widowmak er sta ndo u ts, incl ud ing SIeve Stit h, Kerry Peterson , an d Carl Co lli er, as well as local sta rs Dave Morris a nd ROd Coc h ra n .' The clim b got sta rted with Stoc k a nd Modified Stock cla sses co rnpeting o n a 600-ft. ho rsepower hill that h ad ma n y r iders lookin g fo r a lan ding strip as they crested the top o f the hil l. In the 500cc Stock cl ass, Kerry Peterso n took th e win on h is fa ctor y backed Ho nda , closel y follo we-d by Da ve Morri s. Steve Stith and Da ve Turner. T he utra-competiri ve 500cc . Mod ified Stock class was u p next , a n d th e com pe titio n was in credi ble - the first five riders cres ted the h ill wi th limes so close th a t th e pos itions were decid ed by 1/1 OOths of a seco nd, The victory went 10 R uss McCoy of Oran ge, Ca lifornia , a s he pull ed th e first u pse t o f th e season by roosti ng over th e to p in 10.07 seconds. Stith placed seco nd with 10.15, follo wed by Peterso n , Morris and Turner, a ll un der I I seco nds. Peterson aga in set th e fast tim e in th e first round, with T om Johnson and Russ McCoy close beh ind. In the seco nd round , Peterso n mad e a very fast 12.56 run over th e hill bu t fa iled to slay in bo u nds as he crested th e top , J im Brindos and I\IeCoy were no t no t a ble to better Pe terson 's Iirst ro u nd tim e, hu t then Tom J ohnso n bla sted over th e top a nd beltcred Peterso n 's tim e by a co u p le o f tent hs. This left th e climb offi cia ls wit h a rea l problem : J ohnson claimed Peterson 's second ru n should not have co u n ted since he was o u t-o f-bo u nds . Peterson claimed it didn 'I matter since he wa s already pas t th e clocks. After mu ch a rg u ing o n bo th sides th e o fficia ls fin a lly decided to call ir a tie .
