Australian Jeff leisk became the first f oreigner to ever w in a Golden State moto and overa ll. He did so in the 250cc class with a 1-2 total. During th e next co u p le o f laps, Ward searched for a wa y a ro u nd Pederson in ever y turn , but Pederson held hi s own. Just past th e halfway point. Ward shot pa st Pederson, but a lap later, Ward started slowing with the loose swingarm nut. This gave second back to Pederson, while Holley and Tarantino moved into third and fourth. From this point on, the top positio ns were fai rly spread out with Leisk still way out in front. In th e en d, it was Leisk, Pederson, Holley, T ara ntino , Yamaha rider Andy Eson, Wagem an a nd Honda rider Greg Zitterkop f. Holley took th e early lead in the second mo ro, while Leisk, Yamaha pilot Gl en Bell, Ward and Hondamounted Dave Coupe pursued. During th e fir st few laps. Holley and Leisk were engaged in a great duel. The two riders swap ped positions many times, th en Leisk finally seuled into th e number o ne spot for a while. Du rin g th e th ird lap. Ward passed Bell, reeled-in Holley, out-braked him going into a turn a nd had control of second. Three laps from th e finish, Ward found a wa y around Leisk and went o n to take the win . Second went to Leisk, wh ile H olley wash ed-out on th e last lap and gave third to Pederson. H olley finished fourth a head of Bell , Tarantino and Wagem an. 500ee Pro Series points leader , Laron, took a commanding lead a t the start of the first 500cc Pro moto, and even exten ded that lead as the race wor e on . It looked to be ano ther Larson runaway, but Yamaha rider Ellis was out to change a ll that , With Hondamounted Ziuerk opf safely in control in the third position, Ell is. who suffered a sh o u lder injury during the second round of the series a t Sunrise Cycle Pa rk and was making his debut ap peara nce. started closing ground on Larson co nsidera bly. With only a few laps left in the race. Elli s wa s g lued td Larson 's rear fender. The two riders sta rted to di ce, then Ellis made his move and passed Larson. However. La rson wasn't about to give up so eas ily, and on the last lap Larson retaliated. Ellis tried to make a nother attempt on Larson, but time ra n o ut . Larson took the win followed by Ellis, Ziuerkopf, Honda's Mike Fis her, Will y Simons, Niclasson and Suzuki rider Andy Ellis. What was expected to be another Larson/Ell is duel in the second mo to , ended up being a Larson runaway . However. at the sta rt it was Larson's liu le brother, Mike. who took the holeshot and led for two laps before getting passed by Ph il. Ellis had a sixth-place start . but he managed co ntro l of the second position by the third lap and left Mik e Larson, Yamah a rider Rusty Ott, Kawasaki rider Pete Langley and Andy Ellis to batt le over third. As th e race progr essed. Phil Larson enjoyed a huge lead over. Jim Ellis, \ who had a large adva n tage over Mike Larson, Langl ey, Andy Ellis and Simo ns. Near th e end o f th e ra ce. Simons moved into fifth ,on ly a few bikelerigths beh in d Andy Ell is a nd Mike Larson. This battle becam e mor einten se as th e rno to near ed th e end. Andy Ellis, Mike Larson a n d Simons. eOce Expert In th e first 80cc Expert mow , Yamaha rid er Karcher started things off with th e h o leshot, but Kawa saki rider J immy Gaddis and Lewi s were right behind. Lewis didn't take too lo n g to get around Gaddis , th en he set his sigh t o n Ka rcher. Karcher put up a good fight. but the baule was wo n by Lewis. Karch er too k second a head o f Hon da rider R ick Simmer, Yamaha pilot Shaun Wooten and Gaddis. In the seco n d round, Yamaha rider Mike Pascarella too k the early lead but was closely chased by Karcher. Gaddis and Lewis. Two laps later. Karcher a n d Lewis moved into first a nd seco nd . and th e top two riders sta rted to pull away from the rest of th e pa ck. Ho wever, during th e fourth la p , Lewis, while heavil y pressuring Karch er , went over the handlebars a nd crashed, dropping to fifth . This gave Karch er a healthy lead, wh ile Gaddis, Pascarell a and Simmer fought tooth- tn-nail over second. During th e la st lap, Simmeu slip ped around Pascarell a for third.
