Fastrelieffrom the bends. There are motorcycles that handle. And then, there are motorcycles that handle. The Y amaha FJ600 is the second kind. With one horsepower for every 5.8pounds,our FJ600 has a higher power-to-weight ratio than anybike in its class. (Which may be one reason for its incredible success last year- both on the track and in the showroom.) Yet inaddition toproducing horsepower, this high performance engine alsohelps produce something equally valuable: superb handling. Its the narrowest, most compact, in-line fourcylinder engine in its class. Adesign made possibleby placing the altemator behind the cylinders and not to the side of them. And one that makes it possible for you to lean the FJ over at an extraordinary 49? Ofcourse, making the FJ600 handle like a Yamaha required more than just giving it a narrowengine. It meant building it around a tubular, double cradle frame that'simmune to flexing. Equippingit with a race-developed Monoshock suspension that canbe dialed in to even the most torturous . road conditions. And adding a pair of massive, air-assisted front forks. Fully adjustable,of course. Combine all of this with a set of triple disc brakes, framemounted half fairing and a new low profile rear tire and you've gota motorcycle that's remarkably responsive. And forgiving. On the track or through a canyon, there are really onlytwo motorcycles that cantouch an FJ600. The one you've already read about on the preceding pages. And the one you're about to read about on the following page.
