I CMC/Skoal Bandit Golden State Amateur Nationals: Round 4 Kiedrowski cooks in Marysville By Troy Scott MARYSVILL E, CA, J AN. 26 The fourth round of the Continental Motosport Club's Skoal Bandit Golden State Nationals for the amateurs was held this weekend in Marysville, California. A wet drizzle and cold ai r made riding conditions tough - but th a t didn't stop Mike Kiedrowski and his trusty green machin e 14 from taking back-to-back wins in th e fir st division of th e 125cc Interme' di ates. As th e fir st moto launched orr th e lin e, it was Yam aha-mounted T ommy Seid el nabbin g th e holesh ot and pulling away , a hea d o f Jim Owen (Suz) and Kiedro wski (Kaw). Ow en th en bobbled, losing posit ions a nd falling to fifth wi th Kiedrowski movin g into seco nd. H e then reeled in Seid el to move into th e lead. A lap lat er , over th e doubles, Jeff Matiasevich (Ka w) moved int o secon d , passin g Seid el, a nd sta rted to pursue Kiedro wski . The two riders began movin g away from thi rd pl ace Sei del, wa y ahead o f th e rest of the field. Frankie Brundage (Kaw) the n slid pa st Seidel by enteri ng a turn a little hard er. By m id way, Kied row ski had stretched h is lead to a comforta ble eig h t seconds a hea d o f Matiasevich . Brundage was th en pa ssed by H on da -m ounted T y Davis for thi rd. With two la ps remaining, th e posit ion s didn ' t cha ng e and it was Kiedrow ski, foll ow ed by Ma tiasevich an d Dav is a t th e finish. In th e seco n d rno to , Mat iasevich got into a n early lead ah ead o f Kaw asaki-mo unted Alan P ierce. Kiedrowski th en got by P ierce to capture the n u m ber twq slo t, Da vis moved up to Honda rider Eric Marnoch continued to dominate the 500cc Intermediate class by taking home another overall win at Marysville. put p ressu re on P ierce - with th e two runn in g side by side and Da vis com ing o u t o n top. Davi s fumbled a nd go t o u t o f shape on a ro u g h section, g ivi n g th ird back to Pierce. At this point th e stage was set for a heat ed duel between Matiasevich and Kied ro wski. The two fo ugh t back a nd forth [or th e lead o n nearl y every turn . Davi s held a so lid third. By th e last lap , Kiedro wski ra n a way a nd was co mpletely o u t of reac h o f a ha rd-charg in g Matiasevich . At th e end, it was Kiedrow ski sho wing comp lete domina nce in both mot os a nd easily ta king th e overall score . In the Iirs t mo to o f the division two I25cc Interm edia tes, Honda -mounted Scott McElroy got o u t to an early lead a head of T erry Bostard (Kaw) and Phil Butler (Kaw ). As th e seco nd la p exp ired. Bosta rd sta rted putting th e heat o n McElro y. McElro y th en went down, to yie ld th e lead lO Bostard , with Butler ta king second . Butler the n started h o und in g Bostard , but was u nsuccessfu l in mak ing a pass. McEl roy worked hi s way back up to th ird. only lO be passed by J eff Reynolds (Hon) for th e num ber th ree slo t. By th e midway mark, Reyn o lds was a ble to rind a way pas t McElroy for second, dropping McElroy to th ird . On the whi te n ag la p , the infam ous Kaw asaki rear strut cla imed a no the r victim; th is time whe n th e leader T erry Bostard rode th rough a ro ugh section . Bostard was forced to slow, a nd was passed left and righ t to finish a di sm al 18th place. Reynolds cha rged to ta ke th e win , followed by J err Ma bery ( Ka w) and McElroy in third p la ce. In th e seco nd mo to, Bostard hol eshot bu t a major first- turn pi leup forced a restart. T he seco nd start saw Da llen McKenney pi loti ng a H onda tak e th e ho lesh o t, follow ed by Bostard and Mabery. Butl er moved up, cha llenged Mabery, a n d passed to move into third. Butler contin ued to move, a nd sn uck up on Bostard to take over second. Continuing out in th e lead was McKenney, who at this point was starting to fade. Butler was then passed by Bostard [or secon d, a nd began quickly ga in ing gr ound on McKenney. Bostard mad e hi s move, a nd shot past McKenney to ta ke th e lead, with Butler righ t behind h im to ta ke over seco n d p lace. On th e white n ag lap Mabery was a ble to overco me MeKen ney [or thi rd , and the th ree riders finis hed in that order. Maybery's 2-3 ta!ly was eno ugh lO clai m th e o verall wm, For the first rnoto of division one o f the 250cc Int ermedia tes, Kawasak imounted Frankie Brundage motored into the lead a head of Den n is Redding (H o n) and Pa t Sparks (Hon ). Brundage con tin ued to lead. as th e battle [or thi rd mo unted between Sparks and Suzu ki p ilot Craig White - wi th Spar ks holding his groun d. As th e fourt h la p ticked away, th e posi tions ha dn 't cha nged; bu t on th e fifth lap White go t by Sparks for a fin al a nd decisive pass. Redd ing fell o u t o f the top [o ur, and later Mik e Frowler (Yam ) moved into third. At th e end it was Brundage tak ing th e flag , foll owed by White wi th Fro wler in third. In the seco nd mot o , Redding captu red th e hol esh ot a hea d o f Eric Marnoch (H on ) a nd Spa rks. Marnoch a n d Spa rks the n co lli ded , fell down, and a llowed T erry Szucsko (Kaw) and Brundage to ta ke secon d a n d thi rd.
