CMC/Skoal Bandit Golden State Amateur Nationals: Round 3 Matiasevich, Saling smoke Sunrise By Chris Boice ADELANTO, CA, J AN. 19 Jeff Matiasevich cruised to a decisive victory, while Kawasaki-mounted Steve Saling scored a stunning upset to take the overall win in the 125cc Intermediate motos at round three of th e Californ ia Motosport Club /Skoal Bandit Golden State Nationals held a t Sunrise Cycle Park in Adelanto, Cali- 12 forn ia. The start o f th e first l 25cc Intermed iat e d ivision o ne mot o was redflagged beca use of a fallen rider. Wh en th e riders ca me off th e ga te aga in Kawasaki-mounted Mike Kiedrows ki flew th rough the pack a nd ca me o ut o f the firs t tu rn with th e lead. Bru ce j ackman (Suz), Ward Bassett (Ya m) and Gary Lacy (Ka w) fo llow ed closely for th e first la p. Matiasevich (Kaw) was run ni ng in eighth p lace early in th e race, bu t by the fou rt h lap he had picked off everyo ne except fro nt runner Kiedro wski. Kawasaki rider Frankie Brundage was holdin g do wn third and was p u tting a gr eat deal o f pressu re on Ma tiasevich. Kiedrowski lengthened h is lead each lap while Brundage and Ma tiasevich were ba ttl in g with each other o u t in fro nt of th e fourth pl ace Kawasaki rider Terry Bosta rd. Whe n the eight la p moto wa s over Kiedro wski cruised acros s th e line, ha vin g led from the drop o f the gate, Ma riasevich carne ou t on top in the battle for seco nd p lace. Brundage was th ird , Bo sta rd fourth , an d Lacy rounded out the to p five. Ala n P ierce (Kaw ) took the lead early in moto two, bu t T err y Bostard passed Pierce halfway th rough the first la p a nd maintain ed th e lead unti l Ma tiasevich moved up from a sixth p lace start to tak e comma nd of the ra ce. P ierce drop ped ba ck to fo ur th behind P h il Butl er (Kaw) a nd Bostard. Back in th e pa ck Kiedrow ski . a nd Brundage were trying to mak e up for medi ocre starts by cha rg ing through the field. By th e sixth la p Kiedrow ski had moved himself into second and was being pr essed by Brunda ge. Ma tiasevich was ridi ng a flawl ess race, a ndwhe n he too k the chec kered fla g th ere were n o o the r riders in sigh t. Matiasevich too k the o vera ll win with h is seco nd mo to win . Kiedrowski's 1-2 gave h im second overall , Brundage fin ish ed 3-3 to tak e th ird with Bostard 's 4-4 g iving h im fourth. Alan Pi erce took fifth spot with a 7-6. Yam aha rider SCOtt Myers found himself wi th the hol esh ot in th e first I 25ccInterm ediate divisio n two moto. After the dust sett led in the first turn Ge ne Bal d win (Hon ) had mo ved into second wit h And rew Ol ivia (Suz) in th ird. On the second lap Greg Vowe ll (Kaw) h ad maneuvered h is wa y into third and began to p ursu e Bal d win a nd Myers. j eff Mabery (Kaw ) was holdi ng in fourth with fifth pl ace bei ng contested by Charlie Sampson (Kaw) and Suzuki pi lot Troy Welt y. Halfway th rough the moto Vowell passed Baldwin to take over second a nd started to pr ess Myers. After a lap o f fender to fender com bat Myers an d h is mach in e pa rted ways over the triple j umps, lea ving Vowell to ta ke th e lead with Welt y moving into second. Mabe ry gave u p hi s third p lace slo t to Baldwin on th e wh ite flag la p. Wh en th e chec kered flag ca me down it wa s Vowell in first , Welt y in seco nd , Baldwin th ird, Ma ber y fourt h and Sam pso n in fifth. Moto two saw a very deter mined J eff Reyn olds (Hon ) ju mp into th e lead a nd try to mak e up for a poor first mot o , In h ot pursu it was Kaw a sa ki rider Steve Sa ling, wit h Myers a nd Ma bery bri ng ing up th ird an d fourth . Reyn olds held a healthy lead until th e fourth lap wh en Sa ling got a bead o n him a nd sho t o u t in fro nt. Reynolds' determina tion wa s n ot to be under-estimat ed wh en half a lap larer he made a beautiful pass in a left Danny Barnett (137) and John Matiasevich do some heavy dicing in the 125cc Jr. division three class. Barnett took fourth. Matiasevich fifth. sweeper. On th e sevent h lap Saling cl osed in aga in o n Reynolds to mak e a no the r bid for first. Time ran outIor Sa ling wh en Reynolds took the checkered flag. Saling ca me in a close second with Myers in th ird . Dou g Belch er (Kaw) was fourth and Ma bery hung o n to th e fifth spot. T he overa ll resu lts in th is race were u nusu al because of the incons istent fin ishes by th e to p rider s. T he overa ll win wen t to Sa li ng wit h a 6-2. Seco nd p lace wen t to Welt y wit h a 2-6 . Mabery fin ish ed thi rd with h is 4-5. In fourth pl ace was Belch er with a 7-4, a nd fifth went to Sa mpson with a 5-8. Dax Billings (Ya m ) led th e third division o f I 25cc Juniors o ff the line. By t h e t hird lap h e h ad a 15 second lead o n th e rest of th e field. H oward Tresvill e was ridin g h is Suzuki in seco nd , a nd Bill G ilbert (Yam) was in third. Honda-mounted Dann y Barnett stormed th rough the cro wd a nd by th e fifth lap he was running a com fortable seco nd. Billings was o ut in front a ll by h im self wh en he crossed the fini sh line. Barnett came across seco nd, foll ow ed by jimmy Ta ylor (Hon), Gilbert a nd John Matia sevich (Han). On th e second assault Gilbert was first to th e turn . He held hi s lead for three laps until Bill in gs ca ug h t up with him and mad e th e pa ss. Ron Jordon (Kaw) was ru n ni ng th ird a nd Chris Ward (Kaw) from Concord was ridin g in fourth p lace. T he riders d id n ot cha nge posi tio n for the last half of the rnot o, an d wh en the flag dropped Bill in gs was th ere first. J ordan was second , G ilbert th ird , Ward fourth an d Ma tiasevich wa s fifth . Billings' I-I win ga ve h im the overall. G ilbert finished second with a 4-3. Jordan was third with a 6-2. Barnett was fourth with 2-7 an d Mari asevich 's 5-5 earn ed h im fifth overa ll. The first mo to o f 250cc Jun io r di vision two riders was led for one lap by Yamaha -m ounted Bill Pellet ier e. Mike Neff (Hon ) was in seco n d wit h Suzuki pilot Ri ch ie Haselden in third. By th e secon d lap Pelletiere a n d Haselden had been passed by Neff, Stacy Magorian (Hon), a nd Darrin Hoeft (Hon). Neff led for one goa ro und befor e Magorian sai led out in front o f him for th e lead. Hoeft wa s .sitting back in third a nd charg ed up to sta rt p u tti ng th e sq ueeze o n Neff. After two laps Neff succ u m bed to th e pressure and went down hard aft er the tri pl es. Hoeft moved into secon d wh ile Magor ia n increased h is lead. H on da rider Aaron Gi nn had been systema tica lly worki ng his way up from a sixth p lace sta rt, and by the six th la p had ridd en into th ird spot. Magorian won eas ily with H oeft crossi n g th e line secon d. Ginn stayed in thi rd place withHaselden in fourth a n d Cla y Stanford (Su z) moved up from a bad start to finish fifth . Magorian flew o u t o f the gate at th e start o f th e second moto and wa s foll owed very close ly by Hoeft. Halfway th ro ugh th e first lap Hoeft sta lled h is Honda in a corne r and lost about half a dozen pl aces. Haseld en was wa iti ng to move into secon d a fte r H oeft 's m isfo rtu ne, but found some bad lu ck wa it in g for him too.That lap was th e en d o f the race for Ha seld en . G inn ben efitt ed fro m the mistakes o f H oeft a nd Haselden an d fou nd himself suddenly runn ing in seco nd. It took one lap for Hoeft to work hi s way back into contentio n a n d into th ird pl ace. H e closed in on Ginn a nd push ed him for two laps before he co u ld get by. By th e ch eckered £l ag Magorian h ad held on to a 10 seco nd lead with H oeft and G inn com ing in seco nd a nd third. Charles Abbitt of Thousand Oaks rod e hi s Yam aha to a fourth pl ace fin ish and T ony Siracusa (Ho n) came up from seventh to fini sh in fifth pl ace. The o verall wi n went to Magorian with hi s 1-1 wins. Hoeft fin ished seco nd with a 2-2. Ginn 's 3-3 ga ve him a third, a nd Siracu sa 's 6-5 nett ed him fourth.
