" M r. Mike" Fisher survived a crash to win the first 500cc Pro moto, and he easily won the second to capture the overall, Neither Bob Hannah (B25) nor RickJohnson had a very good day, Hannah finished sixth in the first moto and DNF the second. Johnson took sixth. (Left) Whiting lost the first 12 5cc Pro moto t o Honda 's Johnny O'Mara, but Whiting came back to w in the second and take the overall. Glover finis hed t hird, Burnwo rth fourth. Lechien and Ward battled closely for the remainder of the race, but Lechi en stayed tough and held Ward at bay. Burnworth tri ed a last -second pass on Glover for third but fai led. H o ll a n d finished fifth ahead of O 'Mara , Johnson and J im Holley. " I didn 't have enough energy - it got hard lD hang on," said Ward. "T h is one section I wo u ld p ull on him , and in the back, he would pull on me. H e must have had a co uple of good lin es. We changed the shock a nd forks between moto, 'cause I didn 't like the m - we went th e wrong directi on . We made it softer a nd it ended up bo ttoming five or six ti mes a lap, defin itely not th e th in g to do - it limits how fast yo u can go." " G o ing into th e fin al turn, " said Burnwo rt h , " I had him (G lover). Bu t th ere wasn't a line over th e double jumps, a nd I co u ldn ' t get by. But I' m happy with the way I rode, 'ca use I' ve ridde n so cru m m y la tely." 500cc Pro Making hi s first racing appearance after a leg injury, Mike Fisher returned lD the 500cc class and ran away wit h an easy sweep. In the first moto , Fis her exi ted th e first turn in the lead bu t was q u ickly passed by Honda rider Mike Larson, who was followed by Eri c McKenna, G reg Ziu erk op f, J im Ellis, Larry Dashi el and Jon Nelson. Bu t a h alf-l ap la ter, Fisher fou nd h is way bac k in to th e lead. H e than started to ex tend his lead to a comfortable margin . About ha lfway in to th e race, though , Fis her cra shed bu t managed 10 maintai n hi s lead over Larso n. After Larson brewed a tough baili e over thi rd bet ween Zitterk opf, Ell is, J oey Sch lag, Dash iel, P h il Larson an d SCOll Manning. At th e fin ish , Fis her wo n by about 15 seco n ds ahead of Mike Larson. With Phil Lar son sa fely in third , the bail ie for fourth en ded u p in a tworider duel between Mann in g and Ell is. H ow ever, the duel en ded wh en Ellis got o u t of shape in a ro ugh, to p-gear stra ig h t. Ellis was ejected off h is Yama ha - he a nd hi s bik e sa iled o ff th e track a nd in to some specta tors . Luckil y, onl y o ne specta tor wa s sha ken u p, but Ellis dislocated h is right shou lder. Phil La rson fini shed third a head of Manni ng, Da sh iel . Will y Simons, Ron La Poin te and Rick Bu rgett. Burgett led fro m th e start in th e second moto , whi le Fish er passed him a few tu rn s lat er. Fisher then j u m ped o u t to a' huge lead. By the third lap, Mik e Larson had wor ked into second, while ManningandZiuerkopf batt led for third. Ziuerk opf pa ssed Ma nning in th e whoops and sta rted to pull a way, bu t the rear suspensio n on Zitterkopi's M-Star broke. dropping him ou t of th e race. At th is point, Fi sh er had a huge lead over Mik e Lar son , who had a huge adv antage over Man n ing, who had a huge advantage over Simons. For the nex t five la ps, positions rem ai ned the same . Fish er won with 24 secon ds to spare over Mik e Larson . Manning finished third , Si mons fou rth . 80cc Expert Kawasaki rider Lowell T ho mpson led fro m sta rt to finish in the first BOcc Expe rt mot o , and easi ly won the seco nd lD claim the overa ll. T hompson's neare st com peti tion was H onda rider Kyle Le wis a n d Sco u Brown .
