HAGGARD Actin g Distri ct Ranger '0 -37 on Pettigrew T his is in reference to a letter by Tim Saueressig (Cycle News, J anuary 9). It is ou r concern tha t Mr. Sau eressig d id not present a ll o f th e facts th at wer e p u t before th e race refer ee a nd th e D-37 Co mpeti tio n Committ ee. T here were four issues th at led to the di squal ifica tion o f Chuck Pettigrew . I . D-37 Rulebook sta tes that " riders mu st stop a nd be chec ked for positive identifica tio n." 2. There was a not ice a t sign -in tha t riders had to come to a com p lete sto p a t each check. 3. There was a sign a t eac h check telling ride rs to sto p. 4. There were not es in eac h checkbook from chec ks one and seven that " #134 wo u ld not stop." We quest ioning the First Section Captain , wh o was a t check o ne when the lead ers came through. He sta ted that #134 and #187 came into the check , tied in fir st pl ace. #134 did not try to sto p, but passed #187 wh ile gell ing checked . Ch eck seven had a sim ila r story, however , #134 .was a lo ne and in third pl ace by then . The person checking ran after #134, but co u ld not catch him. It was our opinion that Chuck Pettigrew viol ated D-37's rule on stopping a t chec ks one a nd seven. Moreover, he passed a no the r rider a t check one, therefore taking unfair advantage in passing.
