Cannon andHames flat track wins at Corona By Elaine Jones CO RONA. CA. DEG 22 There was a good tu rno u t o f riders to see th e last race of 1984 go on th e books at Corona Racewa y including some riders wh o have grown up on th e ovals. Curtis Cannon was on a roll o n the short tra ck and started things orr by winning the Open Expert short track . He chased jeff johnson for four laps before the Fontana Ra dia tor-sponsored rider ha d mec hanica l problems a nd relinq uished th e lead to Ca n non. From that point on it was a ll Canno n. Ron Sheets was right behind h im a ll th e wa y wa iting for the mistak e th at never ca me. wh ile Ken King worked hi s wa y th rough tra ffic to pick up third. Cannon was rig h t back on the line for th e O pen Money sho rt tra ck and was out on top when th e flag fell. H am es was seco nd and johnso n had third. Three laps into the race, Hames had mechan ica l problems th at sid elined him , and Cannon held o ff johnson for th e win . H opin g to mak e it th ree in a row, Cannon rolled to th e line for th e Open Money half m ile, a nd th is time Hames, Danny Perk ins a nd j ohnson were ready. O ff th e line it was H arleymounted H ames with Perkins - a lso Harley-m ounted - in seco nd and Sh ell -mo unted Ca n no n in the th ird sia l. On th e second lap, Cannon got 100 h igh in turn o ne a nd la id it down losing two lap s before he was a ble 10 sort th in gs o ut. Meanwh ile, H ames was clicki ng o ff th e lap s, a nd Perkins, wh o was having shi fting p roblems, was trying 10 close the ga p a nd hol d off Honda-mou n ted johnson. In the hea t it too k Hames until the wh ite flag 10 ge t arou nd Perkins. Wh en th e checkered ca me o u t it was Hames, Perkins, j ohnson and Cannon in th e top fou r Ron Shee ts flat ran a way with th e O pen Expert half m ile go ing wire to wire with Ken Kin g a nd Rust y Gai ta o n ly a ble to follow h im home. Bob Graves ca me away with a doub le win in th e Open Ama teur: the half m ile was n' t too ha rd. bUI the short track had to be wo rked fo r. O ff the sta rt it. was G raves in fro nt with Ma ll SIOUten burg second a nd Richard Schroeder thi rd. O n the second lap. there was a p ile-u p wit h the from runners in tu rn .o ne bringing out the red flag. O n the restart, it was jeff H a gge who was out in front wit h Graves righ t back up in fro nt challengi ng. Two laps later, Graves reclaimed the top spot with Alla n Moria rt y in second a nd Schroeder th ird. Schroeder got by Moriarty one la p la ter ; and SIOU-ten burg started putting o n th e pressu re, b u t Moria rty was ab le 10 hol d hi m off u ntil lap nine o f the 1O-lap mai n. At the fin ish it was G raves , Schroed er, Sto uten burg an d Mori arty. Tom mie Lynch made th e tr ip from Ba kersfield wort h wh ile - as he ca me a way wi th a double win in th e 250cc Am / Expert class.
