both Saturday and Sunday. _
Edson earns
Intermediate top
honors at DeAnza
By Mike Gillies
SVNNYMEAD, CA, DEC I
Honda-mounted Michael Edson took the first place trophy
away from the 250cc Intermediates today with a 1-2 over
Mike Fowler (Yam), whowent3-1 for
second.
Edson flew to a first moto holesbot
with Yamaha of Redlands' Sammy
Ramirez, Fowler and Kit Palmer
tr.ailing. Fowler took a soil sample
on the second lap and reentered
the race in front of Edson. Ramirez pulled away from Palmer
but didn't have the speed to catch the
Edson/Fowler duel taking place in
front of him. Even though Fowler
was one lap down, he and Edson
battled fiercely and traded positions
numerous times before the motos
end. Fortunately for Edson, Fowler
won the battle but lost the war: His
early moto crash caused him to be
lapped by the top 250cc Pro and
placed him third behind Ramirez.
Palmer held on for fourth, while
Pomona Honda's Pete Vetrano landed
fifth.
Edson roosted to an early lead in
the second round, but Fowler soon
caught up and passed Edson by the
end of lafl fdur. Ramirez crashed out
of contention on lap six, while Palmer
worked his way from a poor start and
moved into third. Fowler put a small
but comfortable cushion between
himself and Edson to carry him
through the checkers. So, Fowler was
first, Edson second, Palmer third and
VetTano fourth.
Eddie Michetti, riding an RM250,
completely dominated the 250ccPro
class today by leading both motos
from start to. finish. O'Nears Jeff
Prieur (Yam) and Race Tech's Suzuki-mounted Joe Melton fought over
second, with Prieuer taking second
place money by the slimmest of margins. Tony Mayes (Suz) went 5-4 for
fourth over Colin Ryan (Yam).

Kawas.aki Motors' Todd Campbell.
Campbell's KX125 derailed its chain
in the first moto, and that same chain
broke halfway through the second,
providing a frustrating day at the
races for the factory-sponsored racer.
Riverside Suzuki's. Gary Denton
led the pack through the first few
turns of round one, when Campbell
and Dubach went blasting by. Cagiva's Ron Turner was fourth off the
line but got caught 0[[ guard by Riverside Suzuki's Kevi'n Montgomery,
who later bobbled and fell to sixth.
Dubach slipped by Campbell on the
fourth lap, and squeezed some additional speed out of his '85 RM)25 to
pull a small lead on Campbell's KX.
Then, on the 10th lap, Dubach slid
out in some tight S-turns and lost
considerable ground to Campbell.
But, as luck would have it, Campbell's chain derailed with three laps
to go, and Dubach cruised to the first
moto win. Denton' held of[ heavy
charges from Turner to land second,
Turner was third, while Montgomery
finished fourth.
Campbell stood out like an angry
wasp in the second moto as he grabbed
the holeshot and £lew through the
first and second turns without bothering to take his .feet of[ the pegs.
Dubach did everything in his power to
keep the green. machine in sight,
while Turner applied pressure to
Denton. Denton held Turner back
through the fourth lap when Radical
Ron stu[[ed his scooter inside Denton
. and started feeding him his fair share
of dust.
Dubach finally matched Campbell's
incredible pace at the halfway point,
but his chanGes of passing looked
grim. Suddenly, Campbell's chain
broke and he went straight over a
berm narrowly missing some spectators. This let Dubach sellle down to a
smooth, business-like pace that carried him through the checkers first to
clinch the overall with a perfect I-I
score. Turner went 3-2 for second,
Denton was third, while Montgomery
landed fourth with a 4-4.
. Consistency paid of[ for Malcolm
Smith's Tom Thomsen (Yam) who
took top honors in the 250cc Pro class
today by finishing a strong second
each timeout. Suzuki Country's Tony
