Baker auempted lO return the favor, but Dafl began lO stretch his lead at mid-molO. Daft won over Baker and Brown. Brown again slammed the door shut on Baker in the first turn to bag his second holeshot of the day. Baker grabbed the lead in the second tum, then Daft dropped Brown lo third on the next straight. Baker held off Daft for three laps, then Daft dove inside on the sweeper for the lead. Baker railed the outside tine and repassed Daft a second later. Daft look the lead for good by theendof lap four. While Daft and Baker dueled for the lead, YZ490-mounted Jim Thomas applied pressure to Brown for third. Brown kept his advantage, and Thomas eventually lost it while attempting to set up a pass. Daft took the win over Baker, whose 2-2 netted second overall, and brown fini hed third fOT third overall. Thomas recovered for fourth overall. The most intense Amateur action was in the I25ccIntermediate . Tommy Newman overcame a bad start in the first moto and scored an upset in the second [or the overall. Kenny Castor took the holeshot the first moto over CR-mounted Brett Shumate and YZ-mounted DaveSkinner, while ewman wa mired in the pack. Shumate took the lead from Castor on the first lap, and Mike Ables applied pressure to Skinner. By the end of the first lap ewman had moved up to fifth. Skinner made a bid for second but went down and remounted in fifth. Newman dispatched Ables for third but could not get by Castor. Ables went down and gave fourth to Skinner. Shumate had a huge lead a t the checkered, and Castor barely held his advantage over Newman for second. Skinner finished fourth. Skinner grabbed the second moto holeshot over Newman and Shumate then tried to run away from the pack. Shumate latched onto Newman knowing he could take the overall if he finished behind Newman. The Kawasaki pilot had plans of his own and snuck up on Skinner on the last lap. Newman made his move in the - woods and held onto his lead to the checkered. DeAnza MX wins to Motte and Matiasevich By Kit Palmer SUNNYMEAD, CA, DEC. 9 Honda riders Woody Motte and John Matiasevich took top honors in the 125cc Beginner and Novice classes today at DeAnza Cycle Park. Fast riding and a bitofgood luck helped Motte capture the win in the Beginner class, while Matiasevich had to come from behind to win the first Novice moto and to make up for'a second place stan in . the second round. In the I25cc Beginner clas~, Suzuki-mounted Jeb Brock jammed out to an early lead but was pas~ by Honda rider Mike Lupine and Suzuki pilot Watt Kelly by the end of the first lap.
