NOV. 16 Bobby Schwaru won all three rides en route to the U.S. Long Track Championship, on a night lacking in thrills at Ascot Park. "The Boogaloo Kid" also won this race back in 1982. The race was squeezed in between intermittent rain. and the crowd suffered accordingly. Down in tbe pits, it was the best lineup in quite a few years with a fine turnout of British League riders. Unfortunately, most of the races were affairs of the gate with about as much passing as wishbone football. Schwartz won his heat by about 87 miles, pretty much setting the tone for the other three-Iappers. Shawn Moran, John Cook, Eddie Ingels, Buddy Robinson and "Rocket Rod" Sullivan surprised absolutely no one by winning their heats in convincing style. There was a logistical problem in the first semi - Moran and Steve Lucero were sharing bikes. At the last second, Moran borrowed Sullivan's bike and rolled to the line. "The Miracle Worker" got a killer gate and was in the process of passing Schwartz around turn two when the dreaded brain fade struck again - Moran forgot to turn his fuel on. Once he fixed that, he was a straightaway behind, then he fell all alone around turn four and that was that. Schwartz, meanwhile, won easily. Ingels and '81 champ Cook won their emis without perspiration or drama; also entering the main unbeaten. In the main, S hwartz got the gate but Cook passed him around turn two. chwartz took it back around turn four and went on to take the win and championship. The race also marked the return of Tony Briggs for his first action since breaking his neck in 1983. A 50-yardline rider here in '79, Briggs just missed making the main. but took the "B" main easily.
