McCormick masters Oregon one-day By Clay Ught ROSEBURG, OR, OV.4 Desert/off-road specialist Joe McCormick came from central Oregon to cart off a gold medal and the overall Expert laurels at the Silver Star one-day enduro, promoted by Lobo' M.C. McCormick and his 200cc Cagiva proved to be too much for tbe competition, winning the event with a points total of 1090 and impressively beating Open Experts Stan Capps (Hus) and Yamahamounted Dan Logan. Capps tallied 1133 and Logan 1138 with 250cc Expert and gold-medalist Dale Warmuth (KTM) sandwiched between with 1134 points. Capps topped the 500cc Experts' class, a class loaded with talent that included Husqvarna-supported Ken Maahs and desert rider Steve McCall (Hon). Warmuth and his KTM were dominant in the 250cc Expert class, beating Dan Harte(Hus, 1162 points) and Montesa rider Tom Young. David Morton (Hus, 1226), Reed Bright (KTM, 1244) and motocrosser Bob Leach of alem, Oregon, rounded out the top five in the class. The top four received gold medals. and Leach, Ty Sermon (KTM) and Eric Linde (KTM) took home silver medals. First overall Amateur was desert sensation Dale. Demaris making a ·rare enduro appearance on a fourstroke Husqvarna, grabbing the gold with 1240 points. He topped both specia I tests and beat classmate Da ve Burgeson (Hon) by a large margin. Demaris. wa the only gold medal winner in his class. McCormick was the dominant force of the day and lost no route points as he defeated classmates Gene Sigfrid (Suz) and Wes Anderson (Hu ). both recipients of silver medals. Open Amateur winner John Jeschke (Hon) won both special tests and carded the top points tally in his class with 1330 to take the gold medal. Rod Morgan (Yam) and Brian Hill (Hus) also earned golds but were well behind in the final tabulation, with 1430 and 1437 tallies. respectively. Small Engine Special ties riders Brian Hall and Eric Linde donated the prizes for first Amateur and Expert. caned off by Demaris (1240 points) and McCormick (1090 points) to end a grueling day of southern Oregon enduro. OCT. 21 Hi-Poi n t/ In ter-Li n k/Sun River Cycle Husky-support rider Jeff Irwin dropped two points at the Jackhammer enduro today, 10 lead a ational AA rider sweep of the top four places. Lrwin is presently leading the points nIce in District 36 and ha already finished ninth in the national competition. Two points back of Irwin, third-place national-finisher Dave Bertram (Cycle Gear/O'NeaI/BelRay/Nelson BroslTeam Husky) led a tie over AA pilots Matt Cullins and Jeff Henning. Tie scores were common today, as the Oakland Motorcycle Club used short fun special tests to challenge the riders. Leading the A class at fifth overall was Open A class pilot John Haaker on the South City Cycles four-stroke KTM, who lost five points to beat Cycle Gear's Scott Taggart (Hus) by seconds. The next four positions were filled by Brian Beatie (third Open A); Rick Adan (fourth Open A); Bob Terwilliger (first 250cc A) and Jim Bowman (fifth Open A) - all four riders lost six points. Don Hoagland came out tops on a three-way seven-point tie for the 200cc A class win over Dave LaFaille and Mitch Lenz. ot far behind the top A arrowchasers, Four-stroke B rider Craig St. Clair finished first overall in the B class with the only 10 point score. Behind t. Clair, Scott Mever led the 250cc B class with II points, while Franklin Toste led the Vet Bclas with 12. The ties col1linued as Roben Shannon (second Vet B), Rory Davis (first Open B), Jim Johnson (first 200cc B), Carl Henning{second 4SB) and Kirby Wells (third 4SB) - all dropped 13 points. Following the B class riders, the C class pilots also turned in their fair share of tie scores as Vet C class winner P. Smitli scored 20 points to beat out the overal'l C Sportsman class winner J. Jones by seconds. D. Edwards (22 pts) led the Open C class by seconds over J. Shinnick and P.
