Sargent stuns Open Pros at DeAnza By Mike Gillies SUNNYMEAD, CA, NOV. 18 As the average' daily temperature drops in Sunnymead the racing crowd gets bigger at DeAnza Cycle Park. Today's 14 attendance was quite possibly the best DeAnza RacingClub has seen all year. Team Baker's Scott Sargent used an '85 KX500 to dominate the Open Pro class, clinching the overall with an unbeatable I-I tally. Sargent powered to the first-moto holeshot with KSl's Dan Paulson (Kaw) and Suzuki Country's Rusty Hannah in tow. Gear's Scott Wilkinson (Hon) and Yamaha-mounted Larry Lawrence were dicing over fourth when Hi-Point's Tommy Combs (Kaw) came blasting by after. suffering a last-place start. Combs caught Hannah on lap eight and took over second place shortl y thereafter. Sargent saw the checkers first. Combs second, Hannah third and Wilkinson fourth. Hannah holeshot the second mota and managed to hold Sargent off until the middle of lap two when Sargent pulled rank and took over the lead. Combs was third off the line and passed Hannah for second on lap four. Unfortunately, the shock on Combs' KX broke, putting him out of contention for theday. Husqvarna mounted Brent Wallingsford, who finished sixth in the first moto after a poor start, made a fine showing in the second round by grabbing a midpack start and working his way to a strong third. Sargent was first followed by Hannah, Wallingsford, Wilkinson, and Lawrence. Kawasaki Motors' Todd Cambell was the one to beat in the I25cc Pro race, but no one did - Cambell took first-place money. T&O Yamaha's Mark Filler rode an extremely hard race, clinching second overall with a 3-2, while Riverside Suzuki's Kevin Montgomery went 4-3 for third. Pro-Trac's Jeff Matasevich (Kaw) definitely earned hiS overall win in the I25cc Intermediate class. After a relatively easy victory in the first moto, Matasevich crashed early in the second and put on a last-to-first place charge. Holding first place through mostQf the moto \"as Yamaha support riderr Mike Young in his first 125cc race. Young went 5-2 for third overall behind A&L Suzu,kJ'S Chuck Whitmore. uzuki Country's Chuck Hart was fourth. MX kicking things off. Four schools were present, with Upland High easily outdistancing one of last eason's champions, Hemet, to take the season opener. Both -David Farris and Ronnie Jordan were Upland's workhorses; each rider took wins in two separate classes. Farris easily won both of the Mini Senior lTI0tos, as teammate Scott Strangio held second both times out. Farris came back to take the IOOcc Senior class, holding back at times to playfully dice witb Strangio - the only other rider entered in the class. Hemet's Roy Chambers was the only rider to keep Jordan in sight in the l25cc Intermediate division, but after half of the first moLO was com. pleted, Jordan was gone for good. In the second round, Jordan grabbed the holeshot and ran away with the wm. Winning the Open Intermediate class wasn't as easy for Jordan in the first moto, Cerritos' Willie Musty got the holeshot and held Jordan off for half 6f the race. Once by, Jordan opened a good lead which assured him of victory. Jordan led the start of moto two and quickly opened a comfortable lead, but a hard charging Mike Rambo (Perris) began to catch him near the end. Rambo pressured Jordan during the last two laps but was unable LO gel by and took second. In unattached (non high school) action, Yamaha-moLinted Isaboose MassafT) started off his night in the Mini Beginner 13 and Older class with a win in the first moLO. Jeremy Albrecht (Pomona Valley Kawasaki! Best Cycle) followed Massam fQr much of the race but fell back to fourth when Ron Elser (Han) and Jacen Rutt (Hon) got by late in the race. Albrecht took the lead at the start of the second moto, as Massam battled with Elser over second. Elser dropped back to fifth on the opening lap allowing Rutt to take his place in third. Rutt put the pressure on Massam, and after two laps, he had worked his way into second. He then proceeded to pass Albrecht for the lead opening up a small lead that would last to the checkers. On the final lap Massam moved by Albrecht for second which gave him the overall. Rutt's 3-1 was good for second overall, while Elser placed third with a 5-3 score. flesults HIGH SCHOOL MINI SR: 1. Thomsen tops Saturday MX opener at DeAnza By Mike Gillies SUNNYMEAD, CA, NOV. 17 Malcolm Smith's Tom Thomsen put his '85 YZ250 through it's paces today, and, in doing so, walked away with first-place money in DeAnza's 250cc Pro class. Honda-mounled Kimo Casey was the only rider who gave Thomsen any trouble after he holeshot the second round and was untouchable throughout the moto. Casey pulled an early lead in the first moto with Granada Yamaha's Kenny Parry and Sunwest's Mark Decker (Yam) chasing. Decker slipped by Parry on the third lap, while Thomsen fought his way up from a lastplace start. On lap five, Casey halfway took a soil sample, surrendering the lead to Decker. Thomsen was pressuring Parry by the halfway point, and took over second by the 10th lap. Two laps from the finish, Decker went down and Thomsen found himself in the lead, which he held through the checkers. Parry was second, casey third, while Greg Flanagan (Kaw) landed fourth. The second moLO was all Casey'sas he grabbed the holeshot and then built a comfortable lead LO carry him through the checkered flag.. Parry and Thomsen argued ov second up to the halfway poim, thel'l 'Thomsen finished the quarrel by passing Parry and leaving him in his wake, as he chased after a fading Casey. Decker worked his way from a last-placestart to a strong third by the finish. Thomsen couldn'tquite catch Casey, but he didn't need to. because his 1-2 would beat Casey's 3-1 score. Parry went 2-4 for third overall. White Brothers' Mike Carlo (Yam)
