JEri YEARS AGO Steve Bast scored 13 points LO win the U.S. Speedway Championships over Jeff Sexton and Mike Bast, who scored 12 and 10, respectively. The event wa held aL Orange County Fairgrounds, in CosLa Mesa, California. Steve BaSL won four of his five events, Lhen finished third in the final round, nearly ending his changes. Lance King was Lhe vicLOr in the Junior speedway sideligh Levent. Roger DeCoster PUL LOgeLher LWO second-place finishes LO win the Lake Whitney Cycle Park round of the Trans-AMA series. It rained for five days before the Texas event, leaving the course a veritable quagmire. Yamaha rider Ake Jonsson won the first moLO, but crashed in round two, and didn't finish. Series points leader Gerrit Wolsink couldn't break into the top 10, allowing DeCo ter LO gain the series lead. Jim Pomeroy was LOp American in the series up LO this mud race, in third, but also couldn't make it into the top 10. In the Support class, Kent Howerton (Hus) extended his points lead over Honda's Marty Smith with a I-I tally. Smith could only manage seventh overall, after finishingmoLOone in tbird, buta lap down from Howerton and secondplace rider Rick Burgett (CZ). Smith's second moLO was worse, as he encountered many problems. At an AMA District 36 scrambles in Oakdale, California, Dale Mathers (Mai) won the O'pen Expert division over Jerry Griffith (Tri), while Mike Inderbitzen (Yam) did the deed in the 100cc Novice class. District 36 also sanctioned a SemiPro motocross at Marysville, California, where Randy Losh led a Honda sweep of the l25cc Junior class over Ken Spratt and Arnold Plant. Brian Manley was the runnerup in the 125cc Expert race, behind fellow Honda rider Jim Watson. In the 250ccJunior class, Jon Woo (Bul) ended up a littleshortof winner Rick Woodsen's score, LO finish second. Pat Richter (CZ) was the 250cc Expert winner. Bruce Sass entered a n umber of classes aL the SRAC/MRA road race grand prix at Adams County Fairgrounds, in'Colorado. Sass wenL home with four c1as wins and one third place, that one in the Over 200cc Din Bike race. Ricky Graham (Yam) caned off the 125cc Expert trophy at a District 36 TT scrambles in San Jose, California; Kawasaki rider Steve Long was second. In the 500cc Expert main, Steve Eklund rode his Yamaha LO the head of the pack Lo put Jim Foley in second, just ahead of John Hlebo. Bruce Hanlon rode a Maico to Lhe 650cc Expert winner's circle, while Jim Odom (Tri) finished in the number two SIOL YOU TAPA ECT YOU ELF! If I get hurt on the field, I can't make the play.
