The last shock 14 y~ The final ro'und of the series, the Michigan N ation£il, turned out to be a showdown among four riders for the' overall series championship. Can-A.m's Geoff Ballard and ( John Martin plus Husqvarna's Kevin Hines and Mike Melton all had a shot at the title. When the race was over it was Martin with the overall win followed by BaJlard and Hines. However, Martin's win wasn'! enough LO turn the titlt;in his favor. The final points tally saw Australian Ballard on LOp with 128 points to the 126 points o[ Hines and Martin's 125. A rider's six best scores . in the nine·race series were counted LOward the championship. The Midland, Michigan-based Polka Dot M.e., under the direction of Jack Mayer, put together a tough and tight eight-mile course over the Michigan sand. The weather was cool and conditions were ideal for the three-hour race. In an unprecedented move, the four riders who were racing [or the series title were taken out o[ their classe and put on the front row by themselve .It proved to be the proper thing LO do as there would be no second guessing of anyone starting in the back and getting caught in traffic. Melton, still nursing an elbow inj urY', was a question mark on whether he was really ready LO race. Hines and Ballard had just returned [rom the I DE and six days o[ riding. Jt was a question whether this would be an advantage or disadvantage. Martin was fresh and you knew the effon was serious as ] efr- Sm ith was the Can-Am pit crew - deciding not LO race since he'd already clinched the Super Senior class championship. Three hours is a long time LO,race one another, but that's exactly what it turned out LO be. Martin took the lead on the first lap and led almost the entire race. Hines caught him once, but couldn't maintain or stretch his lead. Mel ton never really got in the tussle as I. is injury was still bothering him. Ballard n'ever gave up ground, eventually pas ed Hines and ~tayed right behind his teammate, keeping John honest. \ It was Martin's day as he LOok the overall win. However, Ballard with his second overall finish won the championship. Hines, with a great eHort, came in behind Geoff LO win the Open class and class championship. Although the main emphasis was on the LOp four racers, much more was happening in the other classes. Barry Higgins, who'd already clinched the Senior championship, came up from Georgia to claim his sixth class win in six tries, for a perfect score. The Leonard Keen family, who live 30 miles from the. ite of the event, were all on hand. Long-time Michigan enduro riders of nOLOriety, they put in an excellent showing. Eldon Keen won the 250ccelass while Mike and Eddie Keen took second and founh in the Open class. Kevin Allen won the 125cc class. Gary DeBock LOpped the Four·Stroke ranks while Willard Root took the Super Senior win. • Results OVERALL: 1. John Martin (C-A): 2. GeoH Ballard (e·A); 3. Kevin Hines (Hus). 125cc: 1.
