, Dave Bertram (340) overcame his starting problems of day one to tum in a strong ride. Here he runs with Australian Mike Mills-Thon (70). Fritz Kadlec saw his chance of posting the best American score go away at the first check on day six. Kadlec finished on gold. 22 and we gave it everything we had, but I got there too late and Charlie was very near to houring out himself. That was a heck of a thing to do because he didn't have to stop. I can't thank him enoug;h." . "I saw we had a chance to get Kevin to the check before his time was up and I felt if we could do that then-the chances of the Vase team of finishing up there would be pretty good," said Halcolm. "It was disappointing after all that effort not to make it." The circuit at Norg, a SpOrts faci!ity for soccer and MX, featured a track less than a mile and a half in length with terrain the same as the rest of the countryside - sand and more sand - although the start/finish area in 'front of the grandstands was grassy. The final test, nine motos in all with each displacement class running its own moto/motos, became an East Germany versus Holland shootout. The Dutch blistered nearly every moto they were in, but when East German ]ochen Schutzler sustained a broken ankle in his moto it was all the Dutch needed to begin a celebration. The highlight of the motos for the Americans was Roeseler winning his Four-stroke class moto over Dutch Trophy team riders Simon Schram, the class winner, and Gerrit Wolsink. Additionally, Bob Elliott, who battled starling problems and various mechanical woes during the first four days, ran second for the first three laps in his moto before crashing to the back of the pack. Fredette, Ballard and Kadlec were all in the same moto. Kadlec led to the first turn, but the steering head bearings were so badly worn by that time that when he tried to make his turn the bike kept going straight. Kadlec slipped to the back of the field while Fredette and Ballard, having lost his front brake on the warm-up lap, battled in mid-pack. By the finish, Ballard,' with a broken exhaust and an engine sounding like a bucket of bol ts, led Fredette by less than a second with the two at the tail end of the top 10. Fredette led the gold medal tally, picking up the only one on the Vase team as Bertram and Smith finished on silver as Brown DNF. Ballard, Kadlec and Roeseler van der Ven lost 60 and 120 trail points, respectively. Horst Geissenhoner, an East German Trophy Team Simpson rider, topped the 80cc class while Henk Van Mierlo, aboard a Honda and riding for the Dutch Trophy team was the l2Scc class winner.
