collect excrement from his cows and
pigs.
"1 smelled so bad I didn't even
want to be around me," said Mungenast. "The check point people
wouldn't come near me. I had to get
rid of my jacket and some of my gear
to get rid of most of the problem.
Fortunately, it wa raining or I might
have had to look for a gas mask."
Then, Shillinger had a radiator
hose come loose and lost all his
engine coolant during the second
special test. He rigged a clamp for the
hose, but didn't have anv water for
the radiator. A Dutch spectator handed
him a bottle of beer.
"I put the beer in the radiator and
took off," said hillinger. "At the
next che k, the rew asked me why
the radiator was foaming when I
came in!" Shillinger later crashed
hard on a woods trail and sprained
his left shoulder.
Hyde joked after the finish of the
day that maybe he'd carry a piston
with him because his engine was
making very funny noises and he
only had to finish three more hours
on day six before things were over.
Strong riding and the demise of
one Swedish Trophy team rider helped
the .Dutch to jump to second in the
standings behind East Gerrnany in
the day five standings. The East
Germans held a slim 294.15 second/point lead, 3,000.07 to 3,294.22.
Poland, France and Great Britain
rounded out the top five with the
U.S. in seventh.
The East Germans had a strong
hold on the Vase standings with the
Dutch in second, and the U.S. in
third. The Italians lost Angelo Croci
when trail marshals caught him and
his chase rider trying to swap bikes;
he was disqualiIied.
Of note was the Australian Vase
team in sixth. They'had started out in
J5th on day two and put together five
days of strong rides with little trouble. They would be fourth overall at
the end of day six.
The sixth day of the ISDE is normally an easy one leading up to the
MX-style final test. The Dutch decided
to change that and throw in a wrinkle
of their own. The first checkpoint
caught the majority of starters,
including the Dutch teams, at least
one minute late.
Heading into day six, Kadlec held
a seven second advantage on Fredette
in the run for best American scorer
with Ballard 62 seconds farther back.
Ballard, the first of the three out on
the trail, lost 120 points. Fredette,
noticing something was wrong and
that check wa tighter than the day
before, managed to gas it up and lost
only 60 points. Kadlec then saw his
chances go up in smoke as he hit the
check over two minutes past his grace
and watched as the time check personnel slowly took his card, and by
the time it wa punched he was three
minutes late, saddled with 180 points
and out of the running.
Hyde, Roeseler, Smith, Hines, Bertram, Wilson and Brown all picked
up 120 points or more at check one;
Hyde and Brown were nursing their
bikes to the finish.
Brown thought his struggle had
come to an end just after the next to
last check when his engine quit running for good. Californian Charles
Halcomb stopped, discussed strategy
with Brown and then began to· tow
Brown using their fanny packs linked
together. Halcolm was riding on silver
at the time, but decided to give it up if
he could get Brown to the final check
before he houred out.
"We finally began u ing a piece of
barbed wire between the bikes," said
Brown. "We had to be careful because
more than one rider came up on us on
the trail and tried to go between us.
