JEri YEARS AGO Rookie Expert Rick Hocking (Yam) topped the final round of the AMA Grand ational Championship, the Ascot Half Mile in southern California. Hocking battled with HarleyDavidson teamster Rex Beauchamp before eventually taking the 20-lapper. Third went to Hank Scott (H-D), who had to work up through the pack after a bad start. Scott was the season's rookie of the year. Ln the accompanying Junior Lnvitational, it was a California/Michigan battle with westerner Skip Aksland (Yam) winning over Jay Springste.en (H-D). Yamaha rider Dan McWhorter won the Novice Invitational. Husqvarna's Heikki Mikkola won the Linnville, Ohio, round of the Trans-AMA Motocross Series, taking the first moto and placing third in the other. Suzuki teamster Gerrit Wolsink wen t 4-2 for second ahead of American MXGP vet~ans Jim Pomeroy (Bul) and Brad Lackey (Hus), who turned in 3-5 and 7-4 scores, respectively. Kent Howerton (Hus) won both motos of the 250cc Support class, with second going to CZ rider Frank Stacy_ The annual Check Chase in theCalifornia desert featured 894 starters, but only 421 of them made it to the finish line in Arizona. A.C. Bakken was the first one there, followed by fellow big-bore Husky rider Bob Balentine. Third overall, first in the 250cc Expert class, was BuItaco rider Cordis Brooks. Doug Winchell was fourth overall on a similar machine. The winners were the World Champions from Switzerland, Robert Grogg and Andreas Graber on a Norton-powered hack. First Americans Harry Gaunt and Rolla Adams finished fifth on a Hondapowered rig. Russ Collins, riding a triple-engined Honda dragster, LOok Top Fuel honors from Bob Mauriello's double Triumph in an NHRAIAMDRA event at Atco, New Jersey. Collins winning run was 8.473 seconds at 171.42 mph. Hodaka-mounted Sue Fish and Honda rider Andy Northrup battled for top honors in the 125cc Novice class at a CRC motocross at Rawhide Cycle Park in Elsinore, California.
