Osage wins By Brian George OSAGE, WY, SEPT. 23 As a vicious cold front moved its way through Wyoming, the Borderline Racing Association held a points-paying motocross race in Osage, where cloudy skies and a misty drizzle greeted the 90 riders who braved the freezing temperatures to compete. Professional class racing saw three different winners among the classes, where Mike Friend took his American Banda/Spearfish Honda-sponsored CR to top honors in the I25cc division, then lost the .250cc overall to Rice Cycles' Dave Molder when a fall in the second moto popped Friend's knee out of place momentarily. For the Open Pro category, Perry Bicek picked up first in the final tallies, after a battle with Lynn Hyde that saw Hyde drop out of the second moto when his rear shock blew apart. Friend began the first 250cc Pro moto by taking the holeshot ahead of Molder, Waugh, Brian George and Stork, with Stork moving into fourth by the end of the first lap. Molder and Stork both took a couple laps to get by Waugh, then as Friend motored off with a good lead, Stork pressed Molder hard for second position. George endoed hard off the table-top, allowing Curt Hyde to take the fifth spot on the third lap, with Overman right beside him in the action. Up .£ront, Friend was continuing his moto domination, while Molder rode strongly to fight off Stork's efforts, and the teammates took their battle right to the wire. After Friend took the checkers for the mota win, Molder and Stork headed toward the finish less than a bikelength apart. Molder held on at the wire to take the runnerup slot, with Stork third, Waugh coming across fourth and Hyde fifth. Molder was the first out of the gate in the second mota, with Stork, Molder, Waugh and George right behind. While giving chase, Friend went down just before the tabletop, popping his knee out of its socket and leaving him helpless on the track. Stork, Waugh and Womack moved into the second-through-fourth slots, followed by George and Hyde. George clipped a tire off an uphill jump and again crashed himself out of contention, followed less than a lap later by Hyde, who went down right before the finish area. As the leaders spread out to finish the mota, Lynn Hyde moved into the fifth spot, where he finished behind the mota and overall winner Molder, Stork, Waugh and Womack. Lynn Hyde picked up the fourth overall slot just behind Stork and Waugh, with Womack fifth. Open Pro action began with Kim Bendigo taking the holeshot ahead of Bicek and John Herrin, while Hyde suffered a terrible start and had to work b.ade. hQT(\ the rear of.the.pack. Bendigo held onto the lead for the first two laps, until Bicek pulled an inside block pass attempt in a hairpin turn. The bid for the lead saw Bicek not only block, but drive Bendigo right up and through the corner, dropping him to third as Hyde moved into second. Hyde then set his sights on Bicek, and pressured relentlessly fOTlhe remainder ofthe mota. Hyde's try for the lead ended up short, as he took two excursions off the track while attempting to pass Bicek, and had to settle for second at the wire. Bendigo rode in for a solid third, ahead of Herrin and Eddie Porter. Moto two saw Bicek, Bendigo and Hyde all leave the first corner together, but coming up towards the end of lap one Hyde's rear shock blew apart, the spring breaking and leaving his rear end with less travel than a 1974 CZ. Bicek and Bendigo took off with the top two spots, and despite early pressure from Bendigo, Bicek rode off with the second moto and overall victory. Bendigo earned the secondplace slot in both the moto and overalls, ahead of Herrin and Bill Bennett. AnilIell1$ 1M Covers it all! AI/ that's happening in the world of aI/terrain vehicles. AMERICA'S MONTHLY All·TERRAIN VEHICLE NEWSPAPER Good is-in Alaska MX finale By M.R. Edge ANCHORAGE, AK, SEPT. 16, 1984 The Alaska Motorcycle Racing Association held its last motocross of the year at Kincaid Park. Racers were out in full force for their last chance to add points to the AMRA championship series. As with the past few races Joe Good and Kelly Butler stole.the show with their close racing in the 125cc Expert class. With only 22 points separating the pair in the series the championship was up for grabs. Butler put his Kawasaki Cycle Cache KX into an early lead with Anchorage Cycle Sales' Ralph Blanchard (Yam) close behind. Good had a bad start and began his job of working through the pad. The halfway mark found Blanchard out with a seized engine, Butler still out front and Good gaining ground. However, time ran out and Good had to settle for second. MalO two was a Good holeshot with Butler in second. Good put the throttle 10 the stop and pulled away from everyone. Good held it there for 20 min utes and took an unchallenged first. Butler finished second. Because of his better second-moto finish Good took the day's overall and the 1984 AMRA 125cc Expert championship on his self-sponsored Kawasaki. Good also entered the Pro class where he easily went to a I-I finish. Good's main competition, Butler and Jeff Roskelley, both went out with broken frames. Roskelley still had a large-enough points lead though to wrap up the AMRA Pro championship. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• o YES!
