Hale ails, but wins at Hillside STITT By M. Orr BOYD, TX, SEPT. 23 (Above) Jim McClain finished second 250cc Expert at Kincaid Park. (Below) Scott Sampson won the CRC Corona GP 260cc Amateur class. 32 stroke on to clear traffic and it worked for four laps. Bob Carney was not blinded by Henderson's incandescence. After blowing the rest of the 250saway on the start. hecaughtand passed everyone else lO take over the overall lead by the SlaTt of lap five. He stayed well ahead of everyone else too lO take the overall as well as the 250cc Novice win. Henderson fell off the overall pace a little but still took the Open Novice win. The apparent WIDnerof the I25ccc1ass was disqualified for running out of class and the baton was passed on 10 Danny Crowder who had run a strong second for the entire race. Since CrO\ver was a legitimate Novice, he deserved the win for a fine ride. It was a crunch, but the Beginner event began on time and was over well before 2:30. Homer Sullivan had the most acceleration and was first into the start lurn, followed by SCOIl Patrick and Ron Burkey. Before the end of the first lap, the order had reversed itself and the party of Bur- key, Patrick and Sullivan held th~ positions right to the end and the fust three Open Beginner spots. Bob Michael and Doug Funderburg topped the 250s at the start but Funderburg finished the first lap in the lead. They finished 1-2 in the 250cc Beginner class and had moved up right behind Burkey by race's end. Erik Shanur was the fastest I25cc Begi nner off the line but Phil Wurster was fastest for the ;est of the race. going from a firstlap lead directly to the win. Results • 60 NOV: 1. Out of riding gear, Mike Hale walks around Mike Kidd's Hillside Raceway with an onhopedic shoe on the right foot he broke four weeks ago in a get-off at the track. On the track, with his riding boots on, he still rides lO win in the I25cc short track. Hale, on a Texas Honda-Yamaha/jemco Pipes-sponsored Yamaha, won the heat race, followed by Trace Polson and Clay Carroll. Hale got the holeshot in the main, followed by Roger Sedarat, Carroll and Polson. Carroll took the inside while Polson went outside for a double pass on Sedarat down the back straight. Polson went harder into turn three and came out of four with second place locked up, while Hale led lO the finish. The 250cc junior short track was the busiest race of the program. Willie McCoy won the first heat on his Bates Cycle Honda ahead of Yamaha-mounted Alan Power and Honda rider Polson. Heat two went to Rocky Fivecoat, followed by Randy Prince and james Harris. Fivecoat got the holeshOl in the main and led Powers, McCoy and Polson out of turn two. Powers and Polson got by Fivecoat out of turn four, riding nose to tail with Powers in the lead for the next four laps. McCoy pulled even with Powers on lap fi ve for a handlebar-to-handlebar race for the next two laps before McCoy pulled into the lead with only one lap left and went on for the win_ Polson diced with Harris for fourth place for three laps, before pulli ng away lO take third from Fivecoat at the checkered flag. The 250cc TT heat was won by Suzuki-mounted Bobby Shaw, followed by three Hondas, Kregg Bentley, Prince and Mike George. In the main, Bentley took the lead out of the Winston turn ahead of Ed Meyer's Yamaha, George and Harris. Shaw moved steadily through the pack from sixth to take over fourth from Harris. On lap three, George went inside Meyer on the hairpin turn to nab second. On lhe fourth lap, Meyer went wide in the Winston turn, lelling Shaw slip inside for third. On lap five, however, Meyer launched off the jump to regain third and take the flag behind leaders Bentley and George. Results SHORT TRACK TROPHV DASH; 1. Scan Scherb (Han); 2. Shan Stovall (Vam); 3. Anderson, 'Andent Honda' creak to PRROwin By John Arthur Burrus PHOENIX, AZ, SEPT. 23 Aller the long summer break, the Phoenix Road Racing Organization open~ its 1984-1.985 season with a shghtly reVIsed race format and some new competitors, but with the same top riders taking home most of the marbles. Heat one put the entire field of Stock Production bikes on the circuit at one time and quickly turned into a duel between top PRRO rider Mike Williams on a GPz750 and Kevin Ellioll on a turbocharged version qf the same red streaker from Kawasalci. Williams. sponsored by Kawasaki of Phoenix and MOlO Pro Lubricants, held on to second for most of the race but then threaded his way through lapped traffic in the final minutes lO take the checkers first and the win in Stock Production B. Ellioll, sponsored by Motorcycle &: Marine, Dunlop, Nava and Lancer Leathers, came in a close second and was the first Production Stock A bike across the finish. In the lead lap all the way with the bigger bikes and in fact passing many of them were Ed Wright (Kawasaki of Phoenix) on a GPz550 and SCOIl Scherer on an Fj600 Yamaha. Scherer, who had taken a narrow lead late in the race, went down in the final turn, and Wright added another Production Stock C trophy to his collection. Winner in the Production Stock D category was ScOIl Willock on an RZ350L from Performance Consultants. WiJliams and Wright, among others entered their Production Stock bikes 'in Superstreet competition, and as usual each man won his race. But the star of the show was jeff Anderson (Motorcycle Be Marine. Skip VanLueewen and Nava) on an ancient 900 Honda commuter with jetting problems. Williams' GPz750 pulled through the pack lO shadow Anderson for most of the race, then as the old Honda stuttered in the straightaways, Anderson kept looking over his shoulder and steadily pulling away until he had opened a substantial lead over Williams at the checkered flag. Rounding out the winner category in Superstreet was Mike Reynolds on a very fast 450 Suzuki sponsored by TeamWorks and running all 15 laps with the larger bikes. Formula racing renewed the Williamsl Anderson bailie, only this time they had to contend with Willie Adams on an 1100 Suzuki from john Bush Racing and Bud's Out Back. While Adams rode way out front and alone except for lapped traffic, Williams and Anderson battled fender lO fender for the number two spot in F-l, the crusty Honda always gelling by the finish line ahead of the GPz.
