Burian wasn't safe as~Canale quickly applied the heat while being pressured by Sequeria in third. A lap later Sequeria tried to re·take second in the same place he lost the position, but the attempt failed. He was successful in the hills though, and shortly after passing Canale got by Burian and took off with the lead. Heading into the final lap Sequeria was well on his way to victory, but second had yet to be decided. Canale got by Burian in his favorite spot, the first turn, but Burian didn't back off and stayed in the Yamaha pilot's shadow. When Canale encountered a lapper Burian came within inches, while Baker and Wright were able to close in too. Burian got a little too close in the last turn, clipping Canale's rear tire and going down. Wright passed' Baker to take third and get second overall, and Burian pushed his bike across the line for fifth and third overall. Sequeria's sixth in the firstmoto left him fourth. White, Brown score gold at CMC Baylands MX By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, SEPT. 19 Ricky White and jeff Brown were the stars of Novice-class action at this Continental Mota. . sport Club-sanctioned moto- AO cross at Baylands Raceway Park. White (Kaw) started poorly and finished moto one a considerable dist l'!'lc.e• .!>!Nl}g _ !i.~1'!qa. _ri«!~r~ _!>.a_v!~ Smith, Torry Ormond and Steve Boncyk. The lead had belonged to Roger Eppesor (Yam); a minor crash took him all the way to sixth. In moto two Eppesor made his presence felt as he powered to the point 'and stayed there for the duration of the moto. White had to fight from fourth to gain his second'place finish. He nearly waited too late as the white-flag lap was a third completed before he found the line and the opportunity to blast by Yamaha riders Mitchell Cook and Jim Jacobs. White didn't win any battle but he certainly won the war. At the other end of the racing schedule the 500cc Novi'ce battle was again a fierce one. In this class, Brown and his Honda showed the competition how' effortless victory can appear if there are no mistakes or wasted efforts. Systematically, Brown picked off each rider in front of him until there were .no more to pass. In moto one he took only three laps to pick off Rich Kroske, Lloyd Greig and finally Gary Milewski. Moto two found Brown dispensing with passing; he just powered into the lead from the gate and allowed the others to fight over the remaining positions. Milewski (Yam) held off repeated passing attempts from Jerry Cerro and his immaculate Alpha Maico. At the finish line, the judges saw only inches separating Cerro from a ~ate-charging Merlyn Frank (Hon). Results BO NOV: ,. Shewn Robertson. (Suz); 2. Joson Werren (Kew). BOJR: 1. Holland sweeps DeAnzaMX By Mike Gillies Suzuki's George Holland visited DeAnza Cycle Park and had lit. , tie trouble runmng .away WIth • 99.t P. !T}9!9~ _ !1h_'Y~Y. !9_ e Q~_ t",il SUNNYMEAD, CA, SEPT. 16 overall win. Thirteen other Pros insured an exciting race, and that it was with Sinisalo's Mike Healey (Suz) and Yamaha of Redlands' Colin "Bones" Ryan topping the mortals. Sunwest Yamaha's Mike Magallanes lead the pack through the first turn in the first moto, while Joey Hodad (Suz), Holland, and Suzukimounted Eddie Michetti argued over second. Holland won that argument, and went on to pass Magallanes later in the first lap. Honda-mounted Greg. Nash went from a mid-pack start to second by the end of the first lap, but was taken out by Michetti on the third lap when Michetti failed to hold the inside line in tlie left hander and slipped over into Nash's line. Both riders went down, but Mtehetti recovered in se· cond, while Nash resumed in 13th! Both Healey and Ryan gated poorly, but they worked their way through traffic to hold second (Ryan) and third (Healey) with only a few laps remaining. Michetti stalled shortly after his run-in with Nash, then crashed a few laps later, and DNF. Holland cruised through the checkers first with a half-lap lead over Ryan who had to work hard for second over Healey. Sunwest's Tommy Combs, who was left on the ground in the first turn, did a fine job of pulling off fourth place. Michetti flew toan early lead in the second molO, with Suzuki Country's Tony Spear and Holland following the entire first lap. When they came around after the second lap, Michetti was still leading with Holland right on his tail. Spear took a soil sample, while Healey, Ryan, and Nash were involved in the three-way battle for third. By lap five Holland had a com· manding lead and Michetti obviously was fading while trying' to match Holland's National-level pace. Nash pres.sured Healey through the 10th lap when fatigue set in and he dropped to fifth behind Combs. Holland went on to win, followed by Healey, Ryan, Combs, Nash, and Malcolm Smith's Tom Thomsen. Suzuki Country's Kitty Mayfield clinched the overall in the Junior Vets class with a 2-1 score over Jerry Mullins' 1-3. Michael Robbins (Hon) was third with a 3-2 tally. Results PEE WEE: 1. John SingleJery ~V~"i')'t I J I, PUEBLO, CO, SEPT. 16 Fay Myers Honda's Chris Sundstrom won his second consecu. tive overall in the Open Pro but he did not do it the easy way in this Sports Riders Association of Colorado motocross. In moto one, Terry Kyle pulled away quickly toa big lead over Sundstrom, with Dave Newell working up to third in four laps. On the last lap, Kyle got a flat rear tire and Sundstrom and Newell to'ok over first and second. Sundstrom pulled away from Newell somewhat by the flag with Kyle limping in third. On round two, Sundstrom roared off to a comfortable lead over Kyle and Newell. Then, on lap four, he went down and Kyle took the lead. Sundstrom remounted second, but on the next go- 'round crashed again. This time he remounted just in front of Newell, and the battle for the over· all was on. The twosome, in their race for second, progressively closed the gap on Kyle. At the clieckers, the order remained Kyle/Sundstrom/ Newell with each rider separated by only two seconds. Stacey Cook continues to enjoy almost total domination of the 125cc Pros as he swept the field again. He had wire-to-wire victories in both motos ahead of Tim Buchli, who ran second from flag to flag in each round. Kevin McKnigh t took the show position with two third-place finishes. Jay Martin has this track wired and he showed it with a perfect 1·1 day in the 80cc Expert class. Martin has been one of the fastest 80cc Experts in the state for the past two years, but several untimely get-offs have ruined what began as good runs. Robert Rose, who has been improving rapidly, took second overall ahead of class points leader Brant McCoy. McCoy's third overall further secures his grip on a potential State Championship title, since top challenger Darren DeLoach suffered a broken crank in moto one and finished 10th overall.
