Calia collects CRC DunesMXwin By Cathy Barbacovi VALENCIA, CA, SEPT. 16 It was a day for match races as George Vlach and Johnny Calia battled for the 125cc Novice trophy while Jeff Matiasevich challenged JefJ Barbacovi for the I25cc Intermediate title. California Racing Club provided the action on a modified Shadow Glen course. Vlach led the first moto of the Novice class with Calia right after him in second. Closing the gap, Calia nearIy took ou t a row of specta tors once as he flew awkwardly off the double jumps. Calia was really pushing himself and dropped his bike on the sandwash. This mistake didn't hurt; he still placed second behind Vlach. Bill Waltman took the second-moto holeshot but dropped back and it was eviden't tbat he was out of shape after ·taking a break from racing. Rob Sassen and Danny Barnett took over' and were dicing back and forth before two new leaders emerged as Vlach and Calia swept past Sassen and Barnett. When the day was done it was Vlach (I-I) who took home the largest trophy. Calia nabbed se,cond overall'ahead of Sassen, Barnell and Waltman. The 125cc Intermediate race is almost always exciting and today was no exception. The first moto saw Barbacovi take the win over Matiasevich. PJ I racer Steve Kendall managed third place. Everyone expected to see Barbacovi and Matiasevich battle in the second moto but their confrontation ended right away. As the two went through the sandwash, Barbacovi dropped his bike when Matiasevich switched paths. Coming out of rhe confusion was one of the top women mo.tocrossers, Mercedes Gonzalez. Gonzales held the'lead until Matiasevich leaped further over the double jumps and took over the lead. Gonzales remained in second till the finish. A 2-1 score gave Matiasevich the grand prize. Tom Holt placed second with a 4-4 score. The bad secondmoto break gave Barbacovi a 1-7 score and third overall. Fourth went to Gonzales for her 7-2 effort. Results PEE WEE NOV: 1. Sargis drills MDRAdrags By Willie Duit • BAKERSFIELD, CA, SEPT. 15-16 Clark Sargis topped Nigel Patrick in a thriller to win the Funnybike portion of th.e Motorcycle Drag Racing Association's Gold Cup Championship first round at Famoso Drag Strip. Sargis qualified number one on Saturday with an 8.22-second run at 163.93 mph, and was looking forward to the Low ET/Top Speed money after Nigel Patrick broke. But after an all--night session at the RC Engineering shop in Huntington Beach and along early-morning drive, Patrick returned to set both ends of the MDRA Funny Bike record at 8.13/169.95. Sargis advanced to the final with a consistant 8.23 over John Griego's slowing 9.24. Patrick laid down an off-pace 8.62 that held over Bob Trussell's ailing 9.43. The win light told the story as Sargis, with an 8.24/165.74, edged out Patrick's 8.34/169.95 in the closest Funny Bike final seen here lately. In Pro Stock, Mark Sauro set an MDRA ET record at an 8.81 for the top qualifying position. The second qualifier and MDRA top speed reco(d setter was Lee Hayes at 146.81. In the semi-final round Sauro trailered Jeff Davis with an 8.93 t09.33, and Hayes finished off Gary "Too Cool" Fee, 8.95-9.73, to advance to the finals. Hayes matched the ET record at 8.81 to win over Sauro's 8.90. The semi-final round of Pro Comp matched the nitro Harley of Clyde Rawlings against top qualifier and MDRA Pro Comp ET record setter (8.88), Ray Richardson. Rawlings lost the throttle momentarily at three-quarter's distance and had to settle for semi-final money at 9.20 as Richardson laid down an 8.98. Kevin Murphy's holeshot moved him to the finals with a 9.05 over top speed record setter (146.81) Gary Pena's quicker 8.97. The final was decided before the starting line as Murphy had to shut down due to mechanical problems and gave Richardson a bye for the win; but, showing himself to be a true professional, Richardson pleased the crowd with an 8.90 pass. In Pro-ET Randy Rannberg, on the Eyeball Engineering Kawasaki triple, took top honors over Vince Bocchini's DVR Kawasaki 1105. After five rounds in Street ET, Tom Thurman emerged victorious on an I 100cc Suzuki with Glen Gero, on the Advanced Machine 87OccSuzuki, taking runner-up. Donley/Colt 45/Minor won Harley Eliminator with Tom Pakalus the runner-up, and in Topjian the semi-finalist. .
