Morley savors Nail win Rus~ By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 23 A lot of fond memories returned to a number of thrilled fans as they watched their old heros race in the first-ever Rusty Nail Moran mops up in Costa Mesa finale By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, SEPT. 28 Defending National Champion Kelly Moran warmed up for this Saturday's defense of his crown when he won his first Costa .. S4 Mesa Scratch main since July 6 before a jam-packed house at the Orange County Fairgrounds Friday night. The race actually took two tries to get underway. On the first go, California State Champion Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz moved from the number-four starting slot ,into the lead; "Dangerous" Dubb Ferrell came out second but he hooked up, wheelied and finally went sail ing orr the back of his bike in turn two. That brought a red flag for which Ferrell was excluded. Schwartz and Moran (STP/ ArailCirello Racing/Oakley Godden) came out even on the second 'attempt to start the four-Iapper and they made contact in turn one. They raced side by side down the back chute with Moran assuming the lead in turn three. Mike Curoso came up to challenge Schwartz for second on lap two but his charges were repelled. It looked like Schwartz had second in the bag until the "Boogaloo Boy" hooked up in the exact same spot as Ferrell had earlier and flew off his bike: That didn't'effect'the outcOft1'e Invitational, sponsored by Grin Produels and Inland Motqrcycle Speedway. The big winner of the day was Tom Morley who finished with 12 points, one more than two-time World Champion Bruce Penhall. The field included a number of former stars such as Mark Cherry, Sonny and Steve u~ter, the "Flying Flea" Sammy Tanner, Irwin Moon, Dean Foreman, Jeff Sexton, Morley and Penhall. Some looked like they ride every week while a few looked like rusty nails. Sonny Nutter was leading event two when he went down, forcing referee Moon to make a nice laydown. On the restart it was all Morley who looked as though he was still competing regularly, In actuality he took his first ride in two years four days earlier. Penhall then won his first ride with a stylish performance. Steve Nutter also looked very good and they crossed the line side by side with Penhall taking the win by inches. In event five, Penhall won over Jan Ballard who was on a 22-inch rear tire. Morley captured an easy one in event eight but he had some help as second-place rider Bobby Hill was competing on a flat tire. Sonny N utter led the first two laps of event nine before Jan Ballard went by :md'then'cousHI Slevl" Ntitter'put Results Yarrow's yahoo at Baylands finale By W.H. Spencer fREMONT, CA, SEPT. 20 "I came here to do just one t-hing, that was to win. I knew if I could gate well, I could have a chance," said Duane Yarrow after heand hisSnooky Owens Weslake had done just that in a nearperfect Bayland Raceway championship and quite a capper for the northern California Speedway season. Yarrow now holds championship crowns from both Baylands and Auburn for the 1985 season. The top 16 in points from the 19 weeks prior to tonight were to run the 20-race show and it was a thriller from event one. Teenager Bart Bast rode around Mike Delacy and Paul Orlandi to set the stage with Yarrow taking a good exit line to win event two over Pat Linn and Tom Ferris, Event times started to- get down and fast in race five when Bast and recent sensation Jim Sisemore ran up against Yarrow with Yarrow having, the license to steal from the pole. Faria and his Richmond Jawa rode around Rocky Robinson in round six for the only other perfect score in the second set with Kid Curry and Linn the other two winners. Bast returned to the winner's side in number nine, downing Faria and Team Trim's Steve Martin while teammate Rocky Robinson won the 10th after a good battle with Orlandi, The pivotal round came in number II when Greg Martz rode off the pole for the lead over Delacy with Yarrow back in last. Delacy set sail and rode around the outside of Martz to take the lead and win over Yarrow, who was desparately trying to catch up and finally took second over Martz. , Faria kep \helfdint to(als tIMe in
