12 when he gated around John Volk and then set the fastest lap of the night. So at the end of three rounds, it was Faria perfect at nine, Yarrow eight, Bast and Linn seven, and Sisemore six. If race II was a pivotal round for Yarrow, then 15 was the thriller. With the tape going upand the eight wheels out it was Yarrow with the gate from the outside along with Orlandi and Nelson. Faria crossed the line from outside LO inside and took second, dictating terms to Orlandi who was trying LO get back wide and Yarrow doing everything possible LO stay out front. "I just plain had some brain fade, I guess," related Faria afterwards, after he dropped to fourth behind Yarrow, Nelson and Orlandi. Bast had his last chance in heat 11, but couldn't get past a rejuvenated Martz who scored his only three pointer as Bast was the first one home with 12 points. Delacy rode his last three races just perfect to come up with an II-pointLOtal, defeating Linn in heat 18 and then in a run-off for third. In the la'st event it was Yarrow all the way with the partisan crowd on its feet throughout and as pleased as Yarrow was about his win. Results 1. Duane Yarrow (14); 2. Bart BaSI (121; 3. Mike Delocy (".) (run-off); 4. Pat Unn (111; 5. Jim Sisemore (10). • Tie broken by run-df. pack by the end of the first cirCUIt. John Foster an'd Randy Blevins were going at it for the first lead when Blevins hooked up and forced Foster wide, opening up a clear passage to the front for Schwartz who was comingoff a tremendous start. Foster and Blevins both faded to the back of the pack and when the dust cleared Sterling Cogar was in second with Mike Faria third at the checkered flag, half a straightaway behind Schwartz. Rich Sweeney (Jaw) came into the evening as a reserve but in the end he won a sadistic Second Division main. Shane McDonald took the lead from the gate over Steve Flanagan with Victor Robledo and Sweaney taking Flanagan on lap two. Robledo attempted to get McDonald at the end of lap three but McDonald put on a wicked block to stop him. Suddenly on the fourth lap a II hell broke loose with a couple of spectacular crashes thrilling the crowd and bringing out a red fla~. Only two riders, Sweaney and DaVId Hancock, were left standing and Sweaney was in front and took the win. Hancock got second with McDonald awarded third while sliding face-first across the dirt. Kevin Krugh (Jaw) took the lead near the end of a wild first lap and went on to score the win in a very competitive Third Division main. Bob Tocco was a close second with Mike Buschman third. ~ V ..0 o ... u o (Abovel Penhalliost to Jeff Sexton and wound up second at the Rusty Nails. (Belowl New Junior Speedway Champ Trinon CireUo. Results '800galoo' boogies at Costa Mesa By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, SEPT. 22 When Bobby Schwartz was in town in late July he made a shambles of the proceedings at the Orange County Fairgrounds by taking a win in both the Handicap and Scratch mains. The "Boogaloo Kid" returned and did it again, serving notice that he may well be the rider LO beat at the October 6 U.S. National. On a scale of one to 10 for artistic rendition, the riders got a minu~ six but that was fine with the fans as they witnessed about !l0 crashes. On the other hand, when it came to the main events, Schwartz (Silkolene/Bell/ Oakley/Grin/Malcolm Smith!Justice Brothers/Champion/Sinisalo/Cirello/Cody/Hancock Wes) was a perfect 10. Early in the evening Brad Oxley looked to be the rider to beat as he won his Handicap heat and semi and then his Scratch heat. He came back in his Scratch semi and had a frame break in the first corner. He immediately hooked up and pulverized the back chute wall. Oxley was shaken, (It is believed that he fractured his sternum.) but returned to ride the Handicap main. His bike was put out of its misery in the pits away from the view of the spectators. The Scratch main was all Schwartz. He drew the pole and simply ran off from the pack. Alan Christian was out of the gate second but was passed by Kelly Moran on lap one and John Sandona on lap two. Moran stayed fairly close but couldn't gain .any ground on Schwartz and it was the "Boogaloo Boy" by a comfortable margin over Moran, Sandona and Christian. The Scratch main was another race that had Schwartz written all over it. In that win he started all the way back on tPF~Py.¥p~.amf.Ijoqt~u.r{ ba/Style Auto) on his 260 Weslake rl'ceive a good break. He took the lead from Bobby Cody on lap two and seemed destined to an easy win when he got sideways in tum one on the final revolution and was nailed by Cody with Billy Felts then having to lay it down. Most observers felt Cirello would be excluded but they were shocked when Cody was kicked out and the win went to Cirello. Brant opened round three with another win. Event 12 then saw Cirello lose an important battle to Hancock with Finch taking third. Cirello's next appearance came in event 16 where he was the initial leader but a bobble put Gewecke into the lead. It didn't last long however as one lap later Cirello flew by on the outside on the back chute for another win. Hancock took event 17 to keep his slim title hopes alive with a half-chute win over Billy Felts while Brant closed the fourth round by defeating Cody and Dave Busby. Hancock captured his final heat race but had to have Brant and Cirello finish third and fourth in their heat 22 showdown. That hope ended quickly as Brant burst into the lead fT.9t;!1) tM ~te,w9ile GiJq\lq ,a~e,q PV in turn two. Brant tried to regain the lead but Cirello inched it out all the way to the checkered flag for the very popular win. Brant's two points for _second left him in a tie with Hancock for second. Hancock got the gate on the first try in the run-off but Brant went down in turn three, bringing out a red. On the second try Hancock again jumped out front and led all the way until the final corner when he slid off of blue groove, took a look back and then saw Brant race by for second before he could fully recover. At the end of the day a happy Cirello rose to the top of the rostrum, crutches and all, for his Jerry King National Championship trophy for the race which is run in the memory of the late Denny Pyeatt. • Results POINTS: ,.
